Duties:
This position is located on the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY.  The qualified applicant will have the skills, abilities, training and expertise necessary to provide integrated inpatient psychiatry care on a 15 bed unit. Responsibilities will include biopsychosocial assessment of inpatients, multidisciplinary treatment team leadership and care, collaborative clinical interactions with medical/surgical staff around patient care, provision of quality evidence based psychiatric care, participation in team treatment and discharge planning, support and development of a healthy patient centered milieu, sophistication on caring for patients with co-morbid illness including substance abuse problems and medical problems impacting on psychiatric health and well-being.  Physician should be very comfortable supporting teamwork with the overall goal of maintaining clinical care and staff interactions of the highest quality.  Roll out of evidence based clinical services that enhance patient care in the inpatient setting will be expected as well, including complementary medicine initiatives. Participation in efforts to improve quality of care, including developing outcome data will be expected.  Inpatient consultations, coverage of walk-in services and other duties may be assigned.  Supervision of psychiatric residents rotating through the service would be expected as well. Qualification for faculty appointment at Albany Medical Center is required. ASSIGNED DUTIES: The Physician’s duties include: –              Team leadership and development of multidisciplinary collaboration on inpatient unit –              Implementation and maintenance of JAHCO and VA guidelines for inpatient psychiatric care –              Provision of evidence and community based assessment and care of psychiatric patients including current pharmacologic and other standard therapeutic treatments –              Active participation in multidisciplinary treatment and discharge planning –              Facilitation of reasonable lengths of stays and limited recidivism as possible –              Provides active supervision and teaching for Albany Medical Center psychiatric residents and other trainees as needed. –              Participating in quality improvement initiatives and outcome data initiatives –              Providing patient and family health education with a focus on self-management, prevention and wellness based on the patient’s goals. –              Ordering, conducting, supervising and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests. –              Provision of inpatient consultations to Medicine/Surgery and Emergency Room services –              Mentoring, educating, and disseminating information regarding current clinical practices as part of a multidisciplinary team. –              Provides on call duties as assigned –              Other clinical duties as assigned by Chief of Psychiatry This is a full-time position with primary assignment to inpatient psychiatry with expectation that physician will provide thorough high quality compassionate care to veterans on 15 bed inpatient unit. The physician will be expected to provide team leadership and development, patient centered care, psychiatric resident supervision, involvement in team treatment and discharge planning, consultation to other services within the hospital as indicated, involvement with quality improvement initiatives.  Call coverage is expected as part of department rotation and other duties, including committee membership(s) as indicated.
