Duties:
The incumbent is a certified PA who is responsible for assisting a pathologist in all aspects of an Anatomic Pathologist’s responsibilities, except cannot provide final diagnostic interpretations. The PA assists Anatomic Pathologists in an analogous fashion to the way a physician’s assistant assists physicians in other medical specialties. The PA is a pathologist extender and allows Anatomic Pathologists’ to focus on final diagnoses.Provides surgical grossing services under the guidance of an Anatomic Pathologist, whereby she/he grossly examines, dissects, describes and makes primary diagnoses on patient tissue and organs that have been removed surgically. Also performs autopsy dissections and post-mortem examinations in a preparatory fashion so that an Anatomic Pathologist can focus on final diagnostic interpretations. Knowledgeable and skilled in all phases of organ and tissue preparation for diagnostic examination and storage.
- Enforces safety practices and corrects any hazards that exist.
- Knowledge of principle,concepts, methods, and techniques of anatomic pathology to analyze, evaluate and provide expert advice and consultation. Knowledge of the principles, methods, applications. and state-of-the-art technology in anatomic pathology to provide direction and guidance on critical and complex issues and recommend improvements.
- Delivers preliminary microscopic diagnosis to the Pathologist for patient cases after completing frozen section procedure on surgical biopsies.
- Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and report them directly.
- Responsible for professional and administrative management of an assigned area, to include time keeping and payroll, budget execution and coordination of staff orientation, training and competency reviews.
- Develops, consults on, coordinates, and/or delivers pathology related training programs to pathology assistant trainees and other relevant medical and technical personnel; indentifies the need for new course and program components; and/or design, coordinate, and present training courses.
