The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is a non-profit project of the American Bar Association that works to advance the rule of law worldwide. It does so by providing technical assistance to governmental and non-governmental organizations in over 60 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and Europe and Eurasia. ABA ROLI’s annual budget is now more than $40 million andnearly 700 professional staff working abroad and in its Washington, D.C. office. ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organizations.
JOB SUMMARY
Interns for ABA ROLI will work with program staff of their assigned region to gain an understanding of international development programs and international rule of law issues.
Internships are unpaid, but a travel reimbursement is provided.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Exact responsibilities will vary based on each division’s needs. Typical responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting necessary research projects for program staff. Example topics include access to justice & human rights, anti-corruption & public integrity, criminal law reform & anti-human trafficking, judicial reform, legal education reform & civic education, legal profession reform, and women’s rights;
- Monitoring political, economic, and security developments in the region and producing regular status briefs;
- Assisting with proposal research and writing efforts; and
- Contributing to the development of outreach and communications reports.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate, graduate, or law school student or recent graduate with background in international relations/development, political science, regional expertise, or a related field;
- Excellent writing, research, and communication skills;
- Strong work ethic;
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines; and
- Ability to work legally in the US.
