Under general supervision provides cashiering, customer service, clerical, and data entry support as a cashier in the assigned department.
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The focus of the current assignment is the processing of utility payments and providing customer service. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and be known for excellent public relations. The successful candidate will possess outstanding customer service skills and have the ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively in both English and Spanish. The ideal candidate will accurately receive and receipt money, demonstrate proficiency in the use of a ten-key calculator, be detail-oriented, and possess the ability to follow procedures and direct others.

Performs customer service, including cashiering services; starts and stops utility services; processes applications for utility and miscellaneous services; balances and posts utility payments; processes utility remittances; encodes processed checks and balances to daily cash reconciliation; prepares daily deposits; maintains various financial records; performs mathematical calculations; checks various reports; performs routine clerical duties; make every reasonable effort to continually improve the manner in which the job is performed an increase the quality of service to the public; and performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
:
High school graduation or General Education Diploma.
Experience
:
Minimum one year of cashiering/customer service experience which includes: the use of a ten-key calculator and/or computer and clerical experience
OR
any combination of education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the above minimum requirements.
Knowledge of
:
Office procedures and practices; principles and practices of exemplary customer service; basic office methods; techniques of filing; automated office systems; and operation of office equipment including a personal computer.

:

Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver License. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and be insurable to operate City vehicles.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employees in this classification are under an Agency Shop agreement that requires the employee to either join or pay a service fee to the Service Employees’ International Union Local 620.
As a condition of employment with the City of Santa Maria, all employees are required to be in compliance with the terms and requirements of the City’s Dress Code Policy, CAM 2008-02; which includes restrictions regarding tattoos and piercings.
Upon hire, the candidate must submit a Department of Motor Vehicles printout summarizing their driving record covering the last 30 days from the closing date of this recruitment. Upon hire, candidate must possess a bank account to accommodate the City of Santa Maria’s direct deposit for bi-weekly pay.
