The City of San Leandro Library Department is seeking part-time customer-oriented Office Assistants. The ideal candidate will perform a variety of clerical, technical, special project, and operational support at library facilities under general supervision from assigned management, supervisory, or lead staff. The part-time position(s) will not exceed a maximum of 990 hours per City fiscal year (July through June).


Duties and Responsibilities:


The duties of the position may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Performs a variety of clerical duties including filing, copying, sorting and organizing materials, including library book shelving;

  • Assists in the collection of fees and other monies for various City goods and services;

  • Reports all identified issues related to improper functioning or condition of items, equipment and/or facilities to appropriate staff;

  • Assists in resolving issues;

  • Follows all safety rules and protocols included in the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; takes appropriate action as required to identify and correct safety hazards and report safety concerns to supervisor;

  • Performs required duties under the City’s disaster response plan; and

  • Greets and/or responds to the public, providing basic information and instruction, and performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age; and

Must have:

  • A high school diploma or certified equivalent (GED); if a minor, this requirement may be waived;

  • Familiarity with modern office practices and procedures;

  • A firm grasp of English language usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;

  • Knowledge of basic mathematics for collecting cash and recording daily receipts;

  • Ability to communicate appropriately on the telephone and in person;

  • Ability to bend, reach above and below the shoulder, regularly push carts weighing 75 pounds, regularly lift and carry 11-25 pounds, may occasionally lift more than 26 pounds;

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;

  • Ability to sort and organize materials in accordance with Library policies and procedures;

  • Ability to work in a pleasant, courteous manner with a multi-cultural public, department staff, and other City employees; and

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationship with those contacted in the course of work.

Additional Information:


SALARY AND BENEFITS : The current hourly salary range for this position is $10.07 – $12.25. Employment may begin at any step of the salary range, depending upon the qualifications. THE SELECTION PROCESS:


  • Phase I – The City application and supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated to determine applicants’ qualifications.

  • Phase II – A structured written exam is scheduled for Wednesday, February 24, 2016. This date has been confirmed and it is high recommended that you plan your calendar accordingly.

  • Phase III – An oral interview (weighted 100%) is scheduled for Wednesday, March 8, 2016 or Thursday, March 9, 2016 . These dates have been confirmed and it is highly recommended that you plan your calendar accordingly.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part in order to be placed on the Employment List.


The selected candidate will be subjected to a background investigation which may include, but not be limited to, a personal and employment history assessment, criminal history check, financial background check, medical, polygraph and psychological testing.
