We are an emerging health systems development organization that is currently in a major growth phase. We are looking for an executive to provide technical vision and management to our overall portfolio. The ideal candidate brings proven program management experience, a strong understanding of health systems strengthening, and a solid global reputation. The candidate should have strong relationships with funding organizations to support ThinkWell’s business development efforts. Most importantly, the candidate should be a ‘builder’– enthusiastic to shape the growth of a cutting-edge enterprise that represents the next generation of development assistance.


This is a senior position, based in Washington DC, reporting to the CEO. In consultation with the CEO, s/he will be responsible for managing the overall technical direction and growth of ThinkWell. The incumbent will play a senior representational role with clients, partners, donors, and other stakeholders.


Responsibilities:


  • Lead and manage the development and execution of ThinkWell’s technical portfolio on health systems strengthening, which includes health financing, human resources for health, research and evaluation, and private sector development.

  • Provide management and guidance to technical portfolio managers, ensuring on-time delivery against portfolio objectives, responsiveness to the client, and adherence to ThinkWell’s standards of innovation and technical quality.

  • Ensure coherence across ThinkWell’s overall portfolio of work, promoting cross-program learning among staff and strong collaboration across programs.

  • Work with the CEO to develop and execute business development strategy.

  • Ensure portfolio managers achieve growth targets.

  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with external organizations to support fundraising efforts.

  • Provide vision and leadership on proposal development processes and technical direction to team members internally and in partner organizations.

  • Encourage and cultivate a culture of creativity, disruption, innovation, and excellence.

  • Support external communications efforts by working with portfolio mangers to identify technical areas of innovation and excellence.
    Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or management, health policy, health economics, or other relevant field;

  • Minimum of 10 years proven experience in managing complex portfolios, keeping high-achieving staff motivated, managing external relationships at senior levels, and driving results;

  • Ability to remotely manage field-based programs and staff to support execution of programs, striking the balance between mentorship, technical assistance, and accountability.;

  • Successful track record developing business, including a good understanding of the donor landscape (USAID, CDC, GIZ, DfID, AFD, WB, etc), as well as a solid understanding of the business development process, from capture to proposal;

  • Exceptional ability to frame and communicate complex technical concepts to accomplish a range of goals, from writing compelling funding proposals to influencing the global health systems agenda;

  • Ability to identify innovations within technical portfolio and develop appropriate communication strategies to build brand eminence;

  • Fluent command of English. Preferably working proficiency in Portuguese, Spanish, or French;
    Willingness to travel essential, including to low income countries and fragile states.
