Democracy International, Inc. (DI) provides technical assistance, analytical services and project implementation for democracy, human rights, governance and conflict-mitigation programs worldwide for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. State Department, and other development partners. Since its founding in 2003, Democracy International has worked with civil society organizations, political parties, election-management bodies, government agencies, legislatures, justice-sector institutions, and others in 70 countries.


Primary Function:


The Editor will be responsible for the oversight of all written materials—including proposals, applications, reports, professional articles, newsletters, website items, presentations, workplans, briefing documents, conference agendas, and other documents—to ensure the highest level of quality, accuracy, and professional presentation. He/she will make certain that all written work follows a uniform approach, including company style rules, to reinforce the brand identity of DI and to ensure the quality of DI written materials.


****Job Responsibilities****:


  • Conceptualize, write, and edit written products to meet objectives of the assignment and the needs and requirements of the audience;

  • Ensure publications and other written materials convey the style and message of DI;

  • Ensure the accuracy of all written products;

  • Copy edit and proofread content for both print and web in the most effective and timely manner, according to the AP Stylebook, Chicago Manual of Style, and/or DI style guide;

  • Edit documents to improve clarity, messaging, and alignment with DI brand and advise authors regarding changes in content, style, and organization;

  • Meet project deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review and approval;

  • Maintain current knowledge of key editorial requirements and DI organizational goals;

  • Maintain and update DI style guide;

  • Educate, train and mentor colleagues about questions of writing style, usage, grammar and editorial judgment;

  • Support timelines, compliance, and overall quality of all written materials;

  • Stay on track to meet multiple and overlapping deadlines;

  • Produce and review charts, graphs, tables, presentations, letters, and other documents as requested; and

  • Organize, format, and design complex material, presentations, proposals, brochures, and other documents.

Required Skills and Qualifications:


  • Minimum of five years of experience in copy-editing and writing required;

  • Demonstrated writing, editing and grammatical skills (writing samples required);

  • Bachelor’s degree in related areas, such as English, Journalism, Communications, or Marketing required, Master’s preferred;

  • Excellent copy-editing and proofreading skills;

  • Familiarity with AP Stylebook and Chicago Manual of Style required;

  • Strong commitment to editorial and content accuracy with a keen attention to detail;

  • Background in international relief and development preferred;

  • Strong computer skills, including experience with MSOffice, Adobe products, Photoshop, InDesign and web-based content management systems (Drupal, WordPress), etc.;

  • Self-starting team player able to set priorities and meet competing and demanding deadlines; and

  • Exceptional organizational skills.
