The FHI 360 Education Policy and Data Center (EPDC) seeks to fill the fulltime position of Sr. Research Associate at the Education Policy and Data Center based in Washington, DC. EPDC is a comprehensive research and analysis center focusing on issues of educational equity and school participation internationally. EPDC offers a comprehensive online database of education indicators, as well as a wealth of country-level data analytic materials, through its web resource at www.epdc.org. In addition, EPDC carries out research studies on barriers to school participation, equity in education, education finance, and data quality in international education, for broad public use. EPDC clients and partners have included the Global Partnership for Education, UNICEF, OECD, USAID, Education for All Global Monitoring Report, and other organizations. Job Summary / Responsibilities:
Working under the supervision of EPDC Director, the incumbent will play a key technical role in advancing EPDC core mission of providing rigorous research and timely data for decision making in international education. The main tasks will include:
- Lead or contribute to the design, implementation and publication of quantitative research on key issues in education, using sound research and analysis methods, with a particular emphasis on strengthening causal inference for non-experimental and observational data. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to larger team projects as well as initiate and lead smaller-scale projects;
- Develop or contribute to processes and procedures to efficiently manage large amounts of quantitative data, using Stata programming codes, both for regular EPDC indicator extraction, as well as for special projects;
- Provide technical expertise for the design and analysis of field-level data, in support of FHI 360 field projects in education;
- Contribute to the development of core EPDC resources such as country profiles, data reports, and interactive tools for education planning;
- Contribute to or lead the development of proposals for research contracts and grants;
- Provide research and data services to ensure that relevant FHI 360 business development activities are well informed and data driven;
- Other tasks, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in international education, international development, international policy, or related field.
- In-depth understanding of the international education and development field, including key issues and challenges related to educational outcomes and measurement, key actors in the field, and the development agenda setting process.
- Excellent command of Stata programming functions required, other statistical packages a plus.
- Minimum eight years of experience in international education required, with at least two years of experience working with large-scale datasets, such as household surveys and censuses (can be substituted with PhD + five years of experience).
- Research experience, with at least three research projects that resulted in completion of a research paper, preferably using quantitative analysis of international education data.
- Excellent writing skills in English, ability to write analytical pieces with little editing
- Strong work ethic, effective communication skills, ability to multi-task and work collaboratively and productively in a team environment.
Desirable:
- Ph.D. in international education or related field
- Experience in an international development organization, preferably in education
- Language proficiency in French, Spanish, or Arabic
- Good command of advanced functions and model building in Excel.
- Expertise in data visualization
