The Communications Manager position is designed to work collaboratively within a dynamic, fast-paced, deadline-oriented, multi-media communications department to develop and implement communication activities and write materials that will support the FHI Foundation’s strategic investments in two high-profile corporate initiatives:Fragile States and Integrated Development.
Job Summary / Responsibilities:
The position will focus on developing and delivering clear, concise and coordinated messaging across multiple communications vehicles to ensure organizational-wide understanding of the two Initiatives’ objectives and progress. Working across all communication platforms (email, website, social media, intranet, in-person meetings) the position will foster opportunities for dialogue among organizational stakeholders. The position will support the creation of compelling narratives that support business development efforts to all funding audiences (USG, Multilateral, UN, Foundations, Corporations). Specific responsibilities include:
- Developing and executing the two Initiatives’ overall communication plans (internal & external), including positioning FHI 360 externally through communications strategies.
- Generating communications materials for Integrated Development and Fragile States initiatives such as web content, fact sheets, videos, blogs, brochures and reports for a range of audiences including, but not limited to: FHI 360 internal stakeholders and leadership, funders and partners, leaders in key sector areas, and local audiences around the world; must have the ability to create content and manage approvals, production and distribution;
- Assisting the Strategic Investments’ business development efforts in Integrated Development and Fragile State situations by leading the composition of project proposals and concept papers in both areas;
- Preparing a range of promotion narratives and visual material that will assist in building client awareness of FHI 360’s available technical and professional services.
- Ensuring the delivery of ID’s global technical assistance through consultative reviews and editing of internal customer communications to ensure accuracy and clarity of message and tone;
- Supporting ID Initiative’s involvement in global coalitions (the Locus group), and the management of the virtual ID community of practice and discussion forum;
- Supporting ID Initiative’s Integrated Development Solutions Hub and Integrator network, by composing briefs and updates on the status, use and progress of these service offerings;
- Supporting the ID Initiative’s efforts to build an external facing ID advisory service line of business, lead the preparation of marketing materials and scopes-of-work targeting USAID Mission/DC level engagements.
- Supporting the Fragile States Initiative’s efforts to define and actualize FHI 360 engagement in fragile states, lead all internal communication efforts to ensure total organizational understanding of the Investment’s purpose and short/ long term activities.
- Assisting in the Strategic Investments’ business development efforts in Integrated Development and Fragile State situations, by leading the composition of project proposals and concepts papers in both areas.
- Support global understanding of both the ID and Fragile States Initiatives internally with FHI 360’s stakeholders (to Business Units, Regional Offices, Enterprise Services, Business Services, and the FHI Foundation Board, FHI 360 Board and the FHI 360 Executive Management Team) developing forums and communications channels that convey the activities/ objectives/ progress of the Initiatives Assisting new partnership development through communication activities with existing partners and funders;
- Developing internal and external presentations, materials and portfolio summery descriptions;
- Providing communication and planning support for special events (ID Summit, UNGA presence);
- Planning a variety of internal meetings to ensure successful communication of the Initiatives’ messages and open opportunities for dialogue and debate;
- Collaborating with other Communications team members to leverage existing and new communications channels and opportunities;
- Contributing, through everyday actions, to an organizational culture of diversity, commitment to social change, high performance, continuous quality improvement and innovation.
Qualifications:
Experience
- MA/MS with 6-8 of communications experience; BS/BA with 8-10 years of relevant experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Experience in proposal development, writing, editing, and publications;
- Experience with international and domestic funders across multiple sectors and areas (USAID-OFDA, EC-ECHO, UN system);
- Experience working in a non-governmental organization or donor agency;
Applied Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of non-profit funding streams in the humanitarian arena, including government and philanthropic;
- Able to communicate in a clear, persuasive and positive manner with clients, partners, and staff;
- Able to articulate priorities and actions necessary for a successful organizational initiative;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to work independently and manage sensitive work;
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work closely with and provide support to executive staff;
- Highly responsive to internal and external requests;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships through collaboration, negotiation and teamwork;
- Demonstrated public relations, policy development and diplomacy skills;
- Experienced at motivating, influencing and collaborating with others;
- Demonstrated sensitivity in diverse, cross cultural settings;
- Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.
