Husbandry - Animal Science Worker - The University of Kansas Medical Center - Kansas City, MO

The University of Kansas Medical Center ( KUMC ) Laboratory Animal Resources ( LAR ) is comprised of ~100,000 gross assigned sq. ft. in 4 buildings located on the KUMC campus in Kansas City, KS. The entire centralized animal care program at KUMC was fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care International ( AAALAC ) in 1992 and has maintained its accreditation since that time. LAR has grown to employ 40 staff members and provide services for over 100 Principal Investigators and 500 research staff. Under Team Leader supervision, performs routine husbandry, janitorial, and some biotechnical procedures related to the care and use of laboratory animals. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned by LAR management and veterinarians.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED . Must be able and willing to work weekends and holidays. Lift up to 50 pounds. Wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator. Follow written and verbal instructions. Learn and apply new standard operating procedures and policies. Basic computer skills.

Receive Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician ( ALAT ) certification within 2 years of employment.

Job Duties


Description of Job Duty

50% – Husbandry and Cage Washroom Duties

Complete animal care assignments according to standard operating procedures. Feed and water animals. Receive and identify animals using appropriate methods. Handle and restrain animals. Wean animals. Monitor environmental parameters. Record information on the cage cards and checksheets. Complete forms and send email notifications to investigators. Submit cage orders.

30% – Janitorial Duties

Operate mechanical cleaning equipment. Maintain supply inventory and requests replacements as necessary. Disinfect animal rooms and support areas. Organizes and cleans storage areas.

10% – Biotechnical Procedures

Conduct animal health observations. Euthanize animals and disposes of carcasses as required.

5% – Other

Follow supervisor directions for complying with established federal, state and local regulations relating to laboratory animals and facilities. Follow established health and safety procedures. Follow facility security and traffic flow procedures.
