United States of America: Deputy Director of Security and Operations

Position Description:


Social Impact’s Corporate Operations team seeks a Deputy Director of Security and Operations who will provide leadership on a variety of security-related management and professional support to departments across the organization. The Deputy Director of Security and Operations will serve as the organizational focal point and facilitation agent within the Social Impact to lead on all security-related initiatives aimed at helping Si safely execute on its development effectiveness commitments both at HQ and overseas in a cost-effective manner. This position will be based in HQ with up to 25% annual travel.


Responsibilities:


  1. SAFETY AND SECURITY (60%-70% of time)

Safety & Security Management


  • Active involvement in the business development process and project lifecycle to ensure that safety and security measures are integrated into project and activity planning from the outset and ensure that project safety and security requirements are adequately budgeted for in all proposals ;

  • Monitor and provide internal updates relating to key global security issues and overseas safety trends with implications for travelling SI HQ staff and consultants as well as SI field offices;

  • Maintain records and analyze trends in critical incidents experienced across the organization (both at HQ and in the field offices) and provide guidance as needed to communicate lessons learned to relevant parties;

  • Work with the Director of Corporate Operations, Chiefs of Party and field office Security Focal Points to set and monitor minimum standards of security for all SI offices, including Headquarters, Field Offices and Partner Offices where required;

  • Build and maintain a strong network of Security Focal Points across all of SI’s field offices to facilitate the sharing of best practices and the adoption of an integrated approach where possible;

  • Interface with, and coordinate the support of, third party security and risk management service providers to Social Impact short and long term projects;

  • Act as the liaison between Corporate Operations and other departments at SI HQ, Field Offices, and Partner Offices, ensuring smooth coordination, information flow, and effective support.

  • Collaborate with Field Office and Field Operations teams to determine and address security issues in the field as they arise;

Crisis Management


  • Manage SI’s Crisis Management System including serving as the main point of contact for SI’s 24/7 global crisis hotline for staff;

Training


  • Identify organizational training safety and security training needs and coordinate required trainings through SI’s third party security service providers at both the HQ level and in the field; and

  • Coordinate planning and preparation of SI Hostile Environment Awareness Training

Policy and Process Development


  • Under the direction of the Director of Corporate Operations, manage the implementation of a comprehensive security and business continuity management system for protection of individuals, operations, and reputation throughout the organization; and

  • Proactively oversee standards and processes which function to meet Social Impact’s duty of care towards its staff and enhance the safety, security, and emergency preparedness of Social Impact’s teams and operations at Headquarters, Partner Offices, and Field Offices;


  • Own, regularly review and update Social Impact’s Standard Operating Procedures detailing corporate standards for safety and security management.




  • OPERATIONS SUPPORT (30 – 40%)



Travel Management


  • Manage and serve as the main point of contact for Social Impact’s travel management services vendor;

  • Manage traveler tracking systems and ensure compliance with all Social Impact’s travel related duty of care requirements including but not limited to record of emergency data forms and appropriate travel insurances;

  • Own, regularly review and update Social Impact’s Standard Operating Procedures related to travel management Under the direction of the Director of Corporate Operations, manage the implementation of a comprehensive security and business continuity management system for protection of individuals, operations, and reputation throughout the organization; and

Field Operations Start Up Support


  • Provide surge capacity as needed to support Social Impact’s field operations in the areas of startup, management and close out. Support might be provided remotely or on the ground at the field office location.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


  • Between to 3-5 years of relevant work experience in international development safety and security, travel management, program management and/or emergency preparedness fields with increasing levels of responsibility over time. Experience living and working abroad, preferably in Africa/Horn of Africa or the Middle East. Work experience in a high threat environment preferred. Working proficiency in French, Spanish and/or Portuguese desired.

  • Additional Required Skills and Experience:

  • BA in a related field; MA preferred;

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently;

  • Familiarity with organizational security standards, duty of care requirements and familiarity with operational and security practices for high threat environments;

  • Advanced First Aid or EMT knowledge preferred;

  • Effective oral and written communications skills;

  • Ability to work with a diverse set of staff in various technical areas and at different levels within the organization;

  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information;
