Position: Screening Panelist
Status: Short-term (multiple vacancies)

Reports to: Manager, Data Hub
The primary responsibility of the Screening Panelist is to read and evaluate essays written in English by high school students from all over the world applying for a yearlong competitive scholarship exchange program in the United States or abroad. Panelists provide written evaluations of the essays using established criteria and a scoring rubric. Training on the evaluation process is required.
This short-term position begins in mid-September and ends by mid-December 2016. Panelists are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week (but not exceed 40 hours per week) in order to complete screening in a timely manner. The Screening Panelist is expected to maintain an overall rate of approximately eight (8) applicant essay evaluations per hour. The hourly wage is $16.00 for returning panelists and $14.00 for new Panelists, without benefits. Available work hours will vary according to the number of applicant essays received each week. The schedule is flexible and evening and weekend hours are available. Screening assignments will be completed in the American Councils office in Washington, D.C., with occasional opportunities to work online. Take-homes are not available to new Screening Panelists. No relocation or transportation reimbursements will be provided.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
*Required**:*
o Degree from an accredited higher education institution, OR currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited higher education institution.
o Excellent reading and writing skills in English.
o International or cross-cultural exposure (e.g. participating in an exchange program; hosting an exchange student; or enrolled in or holding a degree in area studies, world language, international affairs, or other relevant field).
o Availability to attend a mandatory training in mid-September:
o Experienced Screener Refresher Training:
September 13, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
or September 14, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
o New Screener Training:
Saturday, September 17, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
or Tuesday & Wednesday, September 20 & 21, 5:30 – 8:30 PM
o Ability to commit to working at least 15 hours per week.
o Demonstrated attention to detail in a deadline-oriented work environment.
o Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.
*Preferred**:*
o Knowledge of any languages spoken in these regions: Central, Southern, and Eastern Europe; Eurasia; Africa; near and Middle East; China; Indian Subcontinent/South Asia; and Southeast Asia.
o Evaluation or assessment experience.
o Experience working with high school students (teaching, tutoring, leading activities).
About the Exchange Program Scholarships:
o The Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program is for secondary school students from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Ukraine. The program offers scholarships for students to travel to the United States to attend high school for a full academic year while living with a host family.
o The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program seeks to provide young international students with a better understanding of American society and its people, institutions, values, and culture. The program helps students to foster lasting personal ties, engage in activities that promote mutual understanding across cultures, respect diversity, establish leadership skills, and understand civil society. At the same time, YES students help their American classmates enhance their understanding of foreign countries and cultures.
o The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Program provides merit-based scholarships for eligible U.S. high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs.
