COMPLIANCE BILLING REVIEWER - East Carolina University - Greenville, NC





The basic function of the Compliance Billing Reviewer is to assess billing data and corresponding medical record documentation to assure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE and other third party billing requirements, as well as the ECU Physicians Standards for Documenting and Billing Medical Professional Services. The Compliance Billing Reviewer has the responsibility of providing a timely and accurate accounting of all reviews including all relevant findings, recommendations for improvement and any provider education that may be necessary as a result of the reviews. The Compliance Billing Reviewer is considered an expert in the field of coding and billing for physicians’ professional services and therefore considered a resource to other billing and coding staff within the Division of Health Sciences. Maintenance of review information via databases, electronic reporting and written reporting is provided by the Billing Compliance Reviewer to demonstrate the ongoing activities of the department as related to documentation review, coding review, and education.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.


Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from HS or equivalency plus: Medical coding training certificate or one year of demonstrated coding experience or completion of a two year Health Information Technology degree or an equivalent combination of related training and experience. Special Conditions for Continued Employment: Must have CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CCSP (Certified Coding Specials- Physician) or applicable coding certification within two years of hire, and maintain throughout employment.


Preferred Education and Experience

A thorough knowledge of CPT-4, ICD-9, ICD-10 and HCPCS coding and billing as it applies to physician professional services is required including an in-depth knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid and other third party payer billing requirements. Computer experience, especially with electronic medical record and billing systems, is essential. Excellent organizational skills, written and verbal communication skills are also essential. Individual must possess coding certification (CCS-P or CPC). Candidates with a two-year degree in Health Information Technology or a four-year degree in Health Information Management and coding credentials (CCS-P or CPC) are preferred.
