These positions support a three year study investigating the landscape drivers of black bear damage to intensively managed forests. This study utilizes GPS Iridium based tracking technology and forest sampling techniques to better understand the proximate cues associated with conifer peeling across the landscape. The successful candidates are expected to acquire hands on experience with forest sampling and identification of various damage agents including black bear peeling and root diseases. Positions will end when all work is complete or financial support for habitat sampling ends (September-December).
This project is based in Corvallis, Oregon. Student employees will work in western Oregon and Washington.
Position Duties
45% Identifying bear damage including frequency, age, and severity within a forest stand used by a collared study subject.
45% Systematic sampling of forest stand plots for tree measurements including Diameter Breast Height ( DBH ), height, and crown ratio.
10% Data entry of conifer damage information from plot surveys including spatial references into an excel database.

Additional Required Qualifications
Two years of college-level courses in forestry, wildlife biology, ecology, or closely related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Completion of USDA / APHIS /WS defensive driving course prior to or within two weeks of start date.
Highly motivated with a strong work ethic.
Well developed interpersonal skills.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Experience in identification of black bear damage.
Experience with operation of 4×4 vehicles on logging roads while using radio communication device.
Experience with timber cruising.
Experience working in the Oregon/Washington Coastal and Cascades ranges.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, traverse steep, rugged, slippery, uneven terrain with dense vegetation while carrying up to twenty five pounds of materials is required.
Car camping will be required throughout the duration of this position due to remote study site locations.
Required work schedule is forty hours a week during the summer, which may include weekends.
