PROGRAM/ DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
Resource Development (RD) staff work in three main areas: 1) raising private funds and cultivating and maintaining relationships with private donors; 2) defining the agency"s brand, raising our public profile and sharing stories about our work by engaging with the media, the public, and our supporters and producing a wide range of online and offline communications; and 3) teaching visitors to our Portland Action Center about issues of global poverty and engaging them in efforts to end it.
The RD team includes several dozen dynamic professionals who possess a wide range of skills. We are database managers, web developers, internet marketers and public relations experts. We are writers, designers, photographers and teachers. We are fundraisers with expertise in direct response, online, community, major gift and corporate giving. We are specialists in fundraising analysis, stewardship, prospecting and customer service. Most of all, we are passionate about Mercy Corps" mission and dedicated to supporting our worldwide team that"s improving the lives of 19 million people in 36 countries.
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The Direct Mail Marketing Officer assists in the implementation of direct mail appeal and acquisition campaigns that support Mercy Corps" worldwide humanitarian mission. S/he works to increase the effectiveness of current direct mail and donor lifecycle journey fundraising strategies and create an engaging experience for donors and key constituents.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Direct Mail Management
- Implement direct mail appeals and acquisition mailings within the direct mail, monthly giving, mid-level and telemarketing fundraising programs.
- Review direct mail copy, art, setups, codes and invoices. Provide feedback to writers and vendors.
- Draft and review data select requests for direct mail appeals and coordinate instructions between vendor and internal Database Manager.
- Assist in tracking results of direct mail and telemarketing campaigns, including running reports, coding donors in Raisers Edge and other analysis tasks as assigned.
Donor Database Management
- Update and maintain master data select, mail plan, donor lifecycle and production schedules.
- Ensure that deadlines are met for each project at each stage of production.
- Coordinate direct mail streams for mid-level and major donors.
- Review and edit telemarketing pledge letters and setups.
- Provide stewardship and cultivation for special mass market and mid-level donors.
- Review monthly receipt updates for monthly donors by editing copy and managing mail house setups.
- Responsible for finding, purchasing and maintaining inventory for monthly donor anniversary gifts and donor premiums.
- Support the implementation of acknowledgment strategy for all grassroots donations, including maintaining receipt schedule, maintaining inventory, reviewing copy, and coordination with other team members.
Marketing Management
- Conduct research and communicate with program staff to gather information necessary for production of direct mail materials; update dollar handle document twice a year.
- Communicate with Development Operations and Donor Services about marketing goals and plans, solicit their feedback on qualitative donor response metrics, and rectify donor complaints as needed.
- Maintain sample library of all fundraising and communication materials; maintain editorial calendar of fundraising campaigns.

ACCOUNTABILITY:
REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Director, Direct Response Marketing & Fundraising
WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Direct Response Engagement and Marketing; Development Operations; MarComms; Major Gifts team; fundraising consultants; vendors.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- BA/S in Marketing, Communications, or relevant field, or equivalent work experience.
- At least two years of experience in direct mail fundraising or related field.
- Experience with marketing concepts and strategy, graphic design, editing, copywriting, proofreading, printing, and production.
- Experience with MS Office and other relevant software.
SUCCESS FACTORS:
A successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, an ability to edit written text and proofread with extreme accuracy, strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize, manage multiple deadlines and coordinate complex schedules. S/he will be able to work well under pressure, respond quickly to new opportunities, and creatively resolve problems as well as establish and maintain positive relationships with co-workers and vendors
LIVING /ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Position is based in Portland, OR. Some evenings/weekends required during emergency responses; occasional travel required within the US.
Mercy Corps Team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC"s policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
