EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:


Under general supervision, patrols an assigned area and enforces the statutes the State of California Vehicle Code and ordinances of the City of Long Beach or other regulations relating to parking and/or standing of vehicles; marks tires of vehicles parked in restricted zones and cites vehicles parked in excess of posted time limits; operates a City vehicle and automated hand-held ticket writer and printer; accompanies street-sweeping equipment and cites vehicles in violation of posted street sweeping signs and other parking restrictions; issues citations to vehicles parked in expired metered parking spots; detects and reports inoperative parking meters; reports suspicious, irregular or dangerous conditions to the Long Beach Police Department or appropriate agency; provides information to the public regarding statues and ordinances relating to parking and other matters; identifies and reports damaged, defaced, covered or improperly posted parking signs and unenforceable curbs; may testify in court regarding parking or standing violations; may arrange for vehicles to be towed and impounded when applicable; may direct traffic in accordance with applicable municipal code provisions and/or secure area perimeters for accidents, floods, power outages or other events; may use a Mobile Data Terminal; may access the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS); may operate an Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR); may act in a lead/ supervisory capacity; performs other duties as required.


REQUIREMENTS TO FILE:


· A minimum of one (1) year of progressively responsible recent full-time equivalent paid work experience providing service and assistance to the public.


· Knowledge of California Vehicle Code regarding parking or standing of vehicles; customer service methods, procedures and etiquette.


· Willingness to work an irregular schedule, including, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime.


· A valid California driver’s license is required.


Ability to:


· Communicate effectively both orally and in writing ; understand and follow written and oral instructions; recognize and report suspicious or dangerous conditions; exercise firmness and tact in conducting enforcement activities; work independently with limited supervision.


· Operate specialized City vehicles, computer equipment, two-way radio, and standard business software.


· Successfully pass a thorough police background investigation which includes polygraph, psychological and medical examination. The investigation will cover information regarding relatives, references, acquaintances, educational background, residential history, employment history, DMV record, criminal history, military service records, financial status, legal history, drug use and related areas.

Examination Scope : Mathematics, California Vehicle Code, safe driving procedures, map reading, public relations skills.


A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination.


Certification by score bands will be considered based on an analysis of test results.
