Position Summary


The Program Associate will provide programmatic, financial, logistical, and administrative assistance, as well as research and writing support, to the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) program. The Program Associate will work collaboratively with the DC-based Latin America staff, as well as its field staff and in-country partners, and be given meaningful opportunities to add value to its initiatives and projects. The Program Associate will demonstrate knowledge of regional human rights challenges and possess relevant academic and professional experience. This position is based in DC and reports to the Director for the Latin America and Caribbean program.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelors’ degree in Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Latin American studies, or other social science or related field.

  • 1-2 years of relevant professional experience

  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in Spanish and English, both verbally and in writing, is required

  • Experience living, volunteering, working, or studying in Latin America strongly preferred

  • Familiarity with human rights or democracy-related issues in Latin America is preferred

  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles and grant-related compliance requirements preferred

  • Experience managing grants, including USG funding, is a plus

  • Ability to apply superb attention to detail and consistently produce timely and error-free work

  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and organizational skills

  • Mastery of MS Office Suite, with experience developing and managing budgets in Excel

  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times

  • Ability to successfully work in a diverse and multicultural environment

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team

  • Strong ability to prioritize work and multi-task to meet tight deadlines in a fast paced environment

  • Flexible and adaptable with a good sense of humor and positive attitude

  • Ability to travel to event sites and field offices less than 10% of the time

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Provide programmatic, logistical, and administrative support to field staff and in-country partners on a daily basis

  • Track and update program expenditures on a daily basis

  • Prepare and review expense reports, financial reports, and payment requests in compliance with Freedom House and donor requirements

  • Draft contracts, letters of agreement, and other contractual documents for partners and vendors

  • Arrange international travel

  • Draft press releases, briefings, quarterly project reports, and project proposals

  • Assist with developing and implementing advocacy strategies for the region, including organizing events and meetings and communicating with external contacts as requested

  • Assist with outreach to other organizations and partners for collaboration

  • Represent team in external meetings and backstopping calls

  • Conduct desk research for proposals, budget narratives, news updates, press statements, events, etc.
