United States of America: Internship -- WFP Office in New York


The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking to fill an internship position in the New York Office (U.S.A). The Internship will be for an initial period of 6 months starting as soon as possible


The primary purpose of the Office in New York is to support WFP’s hunger mandate by promoting WFP’s dialogue and engagement with key stakeholders in New York (the permanent missions, the Secretariat, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the New York-based UN funds and programmes, private sector entities, civil society organizations, media and news outlets, and academia, among others.) The Office in New York provides advice on relevant UN processes to the Executive Director, the Deputy Executive Director, the Assistant Executive Directors, and other Senior Management.


Description:


Under the general supervision of the Director in the WFP New York office, and the direct supervision of the Senior External Relations Officer, the intern will assume the following responsibilities:


· Inter-governmental meetings: General Assembly, Special Sessions, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Security Council and other inter-governmental fora: Assist WFP staff members following the assigned events with all activities related to them: attend preparatory and formal meetings and prepare a timely note on salient points and outcome;


· Inter-agency meetings: Country-Specific or Regional Task Forces, UN Development Group (UNDG), UN Reform, Development, Programming Tools: As required, attend in a support role or the staff member in charge, take notes and intervene upon instructions of the supervisors, report as necessary;


· Thematic and cross-cutting issues: Sustainable Development Goals, Climate Change, HIV/AIDS, Nutrition, Avian Influenza, Emergency Preparedness, Gender etc.As required, attend in a support role under the supervision of the WFP Professional Officer in charge, take notes, intervene upon instructions of the supervisors, report in writing on the meeting including analysis of issues important to WFP;


· Research: In consultation and coordination with other colleagues, regularly monitor issues of relevance to WFP, and advise concerned officers. Sources include the internet, the UN Electronic Documentation System, UN intranet (Iseek), WFP Intranet (WFPGO), and other sources as required;


· Event planning: The intern will also support the planning and execution of events hosted by WFP in inter-governmental and inter-agency fora.


· Other Duties: The intern will carry out any other duties as required and as consistent with his/her abilities.


Essential Requirements:


· Currently enrolled in University and attending courses in one or more of the following disciplines: political science, international development, development economics, international relations, communications or other related fields;


· Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point);


· Fluent in English;


· Strong writing skills.


Desirable Requirements:


· General knowledge of UN system policies and processes;


· Interest or experience in volunteering or working in developing countries.


Terms and Conditions:


· Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the amount of US$700 per month (pro-rated).


· This position requires a commitment of at least 3 days per week.


· WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, travel to and from WFP internship location, necessary visas and costs related.
