There are currently two positions open: a Librarian II (description follows) and a Librarian I ( click here to access the job description). The hiring managers will determine which position is most suitable for applicants based on their level of education and experience.
Performs professional work in a supervisory capacity within a major department of the public library system. The ideal candidate will have experience working in an urban library environment and bring a sense of humor to their work.
Essential Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
When assigned to Adult Services:
- Demonstrate a solid commitment to customer service and cooperation with coworkers to create an environment that is welcoming to all members of the public. Train and encourage staff in the provision of quality public service with emphasis on current trends.
- Supervise all activity of the Adult Information Services Department with the ability to organize and prioritize multiple departmental responsibilities. Set and interpret departmental goals and objectives, policies and procedures.
- Co-ordinate Adult collection development working with a team of professional Librarians; assess reader interest, monitor journals and reviews, select both print and electronic materials making the best use of allocated funds; oversee subscription selections for magazines and lease plans; direct weeding activities; monitor patron requests for materials.
- Provides general and in depth reference services at the public service desk.
- Ability to work with all types of people in an urban library environment.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of computer and instructional classes.
- Interview, hire, and supervise other Librarians, Para professionals, and Technology Assistants in the Adult Services Department.
- Possess a strong interest in Reader’s Advisory.
- Develop partnerships with community organizations, especially those related to workforce development; write and prepare grant applications for assigned service.
- Design creative and meaningful programs tailored to the needs of the community. Devise and implement marketing strategies to promote Library resources.
- Prepare work schedules for Adult services staff including Downtown Branch. There is some sharing of staff in these departments.
- Serve as a key member of the Library technology committee; help maintain the library web pages, Facebook, Blog, and other developing tools. Communicate technology needs to IT Department.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and represent the Adult Services department at Library Departmental and City Emerging Leaders meetings; Keep current with emerging trends in the library profession.
- Assist Director in making surveys, evaluating statistics and reporting on better ways to meet existing needs.
When assigned to Catalog Services:
- Responsible for cataloging a variety of materials using complex automated library systems;
- Maintains the Union List of Serials for the public library;
- Establishes and revises local serial holdings;
- Oversees processing operations of all materials;
- Supervises mending and bindery operations of select materials;
- Analyzes, interprets and resolves system report information;
- Oversees tabulation of a variety of statistics.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises assigned staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution. General knowledge of the principles and methods of modern library service including automated systems, social media and digital resources. 1 to 4 years of Supervisory experience required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
