The Organization


Water For People (WFP) exists to develop high quality drinking water and sanitation services, accessible to all and sustained by strong communities, businesses, and governments. Recognizing that each community is unique, WFP partners with stakeholders to plan, co-finance, and build water and sanitation systems that will last for generations to come, without continued reliance on foreign aid. Water For People’s Everyone Forever model has brought safe water and sanitation to 4 million people in 9 countries since 1991, with the goal of increasing this to 40 million people by 2022.


Water For People is based in Denver, CO, where 35 employees support field operations that are led by approximately 180 employees in nine countries.


The Opportunity


Water For People has experienced strong growth in the past few years, and has ambitious fundraising goals for the future. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will drive this growth and build a robust, comprehensive and sustainable development program for the organization. He/she will also be responsible for providing frontline fundraising leadership, leading engagement with current donors, stewarding and building supporter relationships, and developing systems and processes for accountability and metrics.


Ideal Candidate


Water For People seeks an energetic, seasoned fundraising leader who is inspired by the organization’s mission and purpose. The CDO must have demonstrated success attracting funds from a varied and sophisticated local, national and international audience, and bring a creative and entrepreneurial spirit to the overall fundraising strategy. WFP seeks an excellent communicator; a strong and confident decision maker and problem solver; and an inspirational and optimistic team builder.


Qualifications


Qualified candidates must have 10 or more years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in fundraising, business development, and/or sales. At least 5 years of management experience is required; specific expertise in institutional or nonprofit settings is desired. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required and an advanced degree is preferred. Experience collaborating and building partnerships with senior leadership, board members, and other key internal and external stakeholder groups will be essential for success in this role. Demonstrated performance in outcomes-based organizations where the candidate has successfully developed and operationalized strategies that have taken the organization to the next stage of growth is highly desirable. Experience in the developing world and familiarity with new models in international development is an asset. Spanish language skills are an advantage. Qualified candidates must be available to travel domestically 25% of the time and to developing countries internationally 10% of the time.
