PEN America — a 4,400-plus-strong literary membership organization focused on advancing freedom of expression worldwide — seeks a talented, energetic, and highly organized Project Manager/Coordinator for a critical role in launching a new support system for artists at risk. This innovative initiative, conceived in consultation with a global network of partners and implemented with the support of the Andrew W. The Project Manager/Coordinator should be a detail-oriented, fast-moving professional eager to step up to the demands of a groundbreaking new effort at a growing non-profit. The successful candidate will have demonstrated commitment to human rights as well as experience in complex project management, preferably in an international context. Key responsibilities include:

  • Understand and execute the tasks necessary to launch and implement the project, including research, development of partnerships, collection and presentation of information resources, outreach and communications, and tracking of deliverables, budgets, and other administrative requirements.

  • Communication with individual artists at risk and a wide range of organizations engaged in supporting them.

  • Legwork to identify sources of assistance for artists and development and maintenance of a database inventory of these resources.

  • Research and outreach to build the network of organizations assisting artists at risk.

  • Development of standardized protocols and templates to respond to queries from at-risk artists.

  • Data-gathering, analysis, and drafting of content for the project website and communications.

  • Tracking of action items and workplans to ensure initiatives are progressing on schedule.

  • Support for efforts to expand support for the initiative, including media communications, public events, and fundraising proposals.

  • Budget management and programmatic and financial reporting.

  • Administration including invoicing, expense management, correspondence, and record-keeping.

Requirements include:

· Exceptional academic credentials; B.A. degree required and M.A. or other graduate degree preferred.

  • A minimum of 2-4 years of relevant non-profit and/or project management experience; experience in project start-up and with donor-funded initiatives preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, identify creative solutions to implementation challenges, and advance multiple sub-projects effectively.

  • Superb written and oral communication skills in English, with additional language capabilities desirable.

  • Commitment to human rights, free expression, and the value of creativity and the arts.

  • Sensitivity to the needs and circumstances of threatened artists and the organizations that serve them.

  • Experience with online databases, website management, and social media.

  • Experience with conceptualizing and staging events and handling logistical arrangements.

  • Track record of professional accomplishment, and a demonstrated ability to bring projects to successful conclusion.
