SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

As a customer service professional in one of our railroad stations, you will be on the front line at Amtrak. Your interaction with the passenger will set the tone for their journey, and it is imperative that we make a great first impression. Below is a summary of the various duties and responsibilities for Amtrak’s railroad station customer service positions. If you like what you see, and think you are up to the challenge, apply now. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

There are several different roles within each railroad station, and therefore several different paths for joining the Amtrak team. However, whether you start out as a Baggage Handler, Red Cap, or Customer Service Representative, to truly be an effective station employee and progress through the organization, you can’t be one-dimensional. You must have the “total package.” That means you must possess the skills, attitude and flexibility required to meet a wide range of passenger and business needs. We will provide you with great training, but as an Amtrak employee, you will be expected to work with your team to understand and exceed our customers’ needs and continuously improve the quality of service they receive.


In the station environment, you will work closely with the traveling public, and depending upon your specific job title, will be called upon to perform many of the following duties: sell passenger tickets; quote train fares, schedules and policies (Manually and using Arrow/Stars); make ticket exchanges, refunds and maintain a cash drawer; lift and handle baggage and company material up to 50 pounds; accurately balance daily sales reports; be proficient in all aspects of accepting and forwarding passenger’s baggage; complete appropriate accounting forms; be thoroughly familiar with the Amtrak and non-Amtrak systems, plus United States geography; count change, add & subtract quickly & accurately; be familiar with rail equipment types, configurations and accommodations; be willing to work beyond assigned tour of duty due to the requirements of service; at times, work outdoors or in the elements; and comply with Amtrak’s Standards of Excellence, safety rules, uniform policies, and all other policies and procedures.


OTHER RESPONSIBILITES:

As a station employee, you will meet the needs of internal and external customers. That means you will be expected to demonstrate daily your commitment to safety, integrity, spirit of service, accountability, and humility. Our success is achieved by focusing on people, teamwork and collaboration, stewardship, and collective ownership.


As a result, you might be called upon to perform many of these important duties:


  • Disseminate both verbal and written information to passengers including schedules, fares, routing, tour, baggage and boarding locations

  • Provide guidance to area tourist attractions for our passengers

  • Make car and hotel reservations

  • Demonstrate creative solution techniques and skills in handling customers

  • Be responsible for the receipt of cash and reports from conductors and food service employees and insure the proper distribution of reports and deposits of cash

  • Issue conductor’s supplies, ticket stock and change to conductors and food service employees

  • Interpret and disseminate pertinent information to conductors on regulations, tariff circulars and special instruction relating to ticketing procedures

  • Handle, baggage, express, and company materials; handle all aspects of the receiving, delivering and forwarding of passengers’ baggage including the lost and found

  • Become qualified to operate electrical powered baggage equipment

  • Become forklift qualified; clear and release trains; be familiar with routes for express

  • Assist all passengers with baggage and wheelchair service; push wheelchairs, use lift equipment, handle stretchers, pull redcap carts and lifts baggage weighing up 50 pounds

  • Assist elderly, disabled, and large groups of people

  • Be familiar with the use of radio equipment as outlined by Amtrak; work in passenger lounges, information areas, answering phones

  • Make public address announcements; direct the flow of passenger traffic

  • Assist in the boarding areas for gate control

  • Walk platforms and trains to assist elderly, disabled, and groups

  • Accurately write Emergency Exchange Vouchers

  • Clearly and professionally speak all Amtrak and public service announcements

  • Monitor building maintenance computer system and report all failures to the proper authority

  • Create and disseminate re-accommodation information for distressed travelers

  • Maintain accurate records of all arrivals and departures

  • Clean passenger/baggage platforms, driveways, sidewalks, station interior areas, shovel, sweep, scrape, and clean station tracks

  • Transport Amtrak crews and be responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of this personnel within the terminal and surrounding areas and for the safe operation of the Company vehicle to which assigned


Range of Pay:

Based on position held and progressive rate of pay, the ranges for these positions are;


$13.35 to $20.75 per hour


Annual straight time base pay on 40 hours per week is;


$27,768 to $43,160 plus benefits
