PARK MANAGER I/HISTORIC SITE MANAGER - Commonwealth of Kentucky - Harlan County, KY

Description of Job Duties

This position will be responsible for exhibiting leadership for park staff and providing guidance to achieve the goals of the Department of Parks; the successful candidate must have the skills to efficiently and effectively oversee park operations, care/maintenance and security of all park facilities and property, within established operational guidelines. Responsible for supervising and inspecting the construction, maintenance and/or operation of buildings, grounds and recreational areas. The manager is expected to provide training and assistance to park employees.

Responsible for maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies for the operation of the park and its facilities; maintaining business and financial records and reports, and making bank deposits. Will need to prepare operational reports and records for the Department of Parks and the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet. Maintains good public relations with park visitors and the community. Works with the local community to promote and market Kingdom Come State Park, and will work with department personnel to ensure that the park serves the needs of its customers.


Must be able to communicate, implement and enforce applicable statutes, regulations and Parks’ policies, procedures and programs to staff, guests and visitors.


Prefer applicants that have a working knowledge of planning and conducting special events, the ability to provide and lead quality interpretive naturalist and recreational experiences that are conducive to biological, ecological, and geological amenities at the park, and to promote tourism initiatives for generating guest visitation and revenues.

Characteristics of the Job :

Manages the operation of a small recreational state park; and performs other duties as required. (NOTE: Applies to Carr Creek, Kingdom Come, Lake Malone, Nolin Lake, Paintsville Lake and Taylorsville Lake state parks.); OR Manages all programs and operations of a historic site and/or museum. Provides historic site interpretation; and performs other duties as required


Typical Working Conditions and Unique Physical Requirements :

Work typically consists of office duties in a state park setting.


Additional Requirements :

Upon appointment, employees in this class may be required to maintain a valid driver’s license and required to drive a licensed vehicle. This status may be necessary for the length of time in this class. If this is necessary it will be listed in the specific position description for that position. Applicants and employees in this classification may be required to submit to a drug screening test and background check. Applicants and employees in positions which perform job duties that may require contact with offenders in the custody or supervision of the Department of Corrections or with youth in the care, custody, or supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice must meet qualifications pursuant to the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, 28 C.F.R.115.17 and 115.317.
