Under general supervision, Messenger/Mail Clerks process all outgoing mail, including customer bills, and deliver mail, messages, documents, packages, and supplies to various East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) offices and facilities. Duties require safely operating motor vehicles on a regular basis and the flexibility to shift from one assignment to another.
Typical duties include:
- Delivering and picking up mail, packages and parcels by foot at various EBMUD offices, facilities and locations.
- Driving a vehicle between EBMUD facilities, the U.S. Post Office, banks and other locations as assigned, in order to deliver and pick up mail, documents, parcels, packages and related materials.
- Accurately sorting mail into proper slots for delivery.
- Following routes so that mail may be delivered in a safe and timely manner; adhering to a fixed schedule.
- Operating a variety of mailroom equipment including letter openers, mail inserters, postage meters and postage scales; making minor adjustments and repairs to such equipment as required.
- Determining the appropriate postal class, department code and correct postage to affix to domestic and international outgoing mail.
- Maintaining standards records, completing forms concerning postage used, bulk, certified and registered mail, bills sent out, mileage driven, etc.
- Other responsibilities include performing clerical tasks incidental to the job and arranging for the cleanliness of the assigned motor vehicles.

The salary range is $4,191 per month increasing to $4,401, $4,621, $4,852 and $5,095 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Requirements:
A typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge, skills and abilities is:
1. Completion of the twelfth grade, or its equivalent, and no experience is required.
2. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
3. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sufficient strength to lift boxes weighing up to 50 pounds; sufficient stamina to stand and walk for several hours.
4. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.

The Selection Process:
1. Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com beginning at 4:30 pm Wednesday, May 25 and submitted by 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 27, 2016. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted. The first 250 applications and supplemental responses demonstrating the desirable qualifications will be invited to one of the written test sessions scheduled for Friday, June 17, 2016.

2. Those candidates who pass the written exam will be invited to the panel interview tentatively scheduled for mid-July.
3. Candidates successful on all test parts will be placed on a hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
