About the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience


The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (the Coalition) is a rapidly growing nonprofit network of museums, historic sites, organizations and individuals dedicated to creating a more peaceful future through remembering past struggles and addressing their contemporary legacies. Founded in 1999 by a group of nine pioneering heritage and human rights leaders on four continents, the Coalition has grown to more than 200 members in 55 countries, working in regional and thematic networks in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Russia, North America and in the Middle East and North Africa. Each year, more than 20 million people visit Sites of Conscience across the globe to participate in programs that promote civic action by connecting history and memory with contemporary human rights, social justice and transitional justice issues.


Position Description


The Coalition is seeking a mid-career professional to fill the newly created position of Program Director, Global Transitional Justice Initiative. Through its transitional justice program, the Coalition leads a consortium of nine international organizational partners who, along with members of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, develop and implement a range of rapid response program activities utilizing both restorative and retributive approaches to justice and accountability for gross human rights violations.


The activities of the Global Initiative for Justice, Truth and Reconciliation include:


  • Truth-telling, reconciliation, memorialization, and other forms of historical memory;

  • Documenting human rights abuses for transitional justice purposes;

  • Forensic analysis and other efforts related to missing and disappeared persons;

  • Victims’ advocacy such as improving access to justice, psychosocial support and trauma mitigation activities;

  • Providing technical assistance to and building the capacity of civil society activists and organizations to promote and engage on transitional justice processes;

  • Ensuring gender justice in all of these processes; and

  • Reparative justice initiatives.

The Global Transitional Justice Initiative Program Director reports directly to the Senior Program Director: Global Transitional Justice Initiative. The position, based either in New York City or Washington D.C., requires domestic as well as international travel. This position requires a self-starter with proven experience in the field of transitional justice, who prioritizes working collaboratively and is committed to the Coalition’s vision for developing holistic, innovative and effective responses to the needs of both civil society and government in countries in transition. This is a grant-funded position.


Responsibilities


  • Lead regional and thematic transitional justice workshops, trainings and field missions.

  • Design and implement workshop plans, trainings, seminars, in-country assessments and other activities in collaboration with project partners.

  • Lead the development of project proposals and budgets in collaboration with other team members and/or transitional justice program partners.

  • Develop, manage and track project budgets ensuring compliance with the Coalition’s policies.

  • Prepare and present project briefs, reports, and donor cultivation and solicitation materials.

Qualifications


  • A Master’s Degree in the social sciences, law or related field with a strong transitional justice background

  • Five to seven years relevant non-profit experience in the field of transitional justice, peacebuilding or human rights

  • Minimum of three years experience in field-based program management with specific expertise in developing civil society based initiatives in countries transitioning from conflict or authoritarian rule

  • Minimum of three years experience in community-based workshop facilitation and training

  • Experience with grant reporting requirements and procedures. Familiarity with U.S. government-funded projects is a strong advantage.

  • Experience in financial management and budget development

  • Highly motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a multinational, decentralized, and project-driven team

  • Good communication skills

  • Fluency in Spanish, French, or Arabic is a plus. Working knowledge of Arabic is a strong advantage.
