Park Ranger I (Park Ranger Interpreter) - Texas Parks and Wildlife Department - Stonewall, TX





Under the direction of the Park Farm Manager, this position is responsible for interpretation and preservation of the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm and other park special events, programs, and outreach. The unique farm historic facility portrays the lifestyles of a typical German farm family in eastern Gillespie County at the turn-of-the-century (1915-1918) in an authentic farm setting involving 3rd person interpretation. Assists with providing living history demonstrations to the public by using a variety of artifacts and/or replicas, interprets life on the farm using appropriate methods in relationship to the area, and gives interpretive tours on a daily basis. Quality customer service, both internal and external, plays a vital role in this position. Dresses in authentic costume, cares for farm livestock, maintains and cleans historic buildings, maintains park and farm grounds, and performs routine facility maintenance on historic structures and equipment. Assists with outreach and educational programs for all ages. Other duties include assisting with park promotions, park volunteers, safety program, fee collections, and preparation of assigned reports. Performs additional duties as assigned. Qualification Guidelines:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree. Experience:


No experience required. Licensure:
Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class “C” Texas driver’s license. NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license. ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS: Education:

One year of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university in one of the following areas: Park Administration, Recreation & Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology/Archeology, History, or closely related field. Experience:

One year facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience;

Experience in customer service;

Experience in park operations;

Experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs;

Experience working with the public;

Experience working with livestock such as milk cows, swine, sheep, horses, mules, and all associated farm animals.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic mathematics;

Knowledge of general facility and grounds maintenance related to historic sites, buildings, park grounds and farms areas;

Knowledge of interpretive techniques such as 3rd person living history, exhibit development, and publication development;

Knowledge of Texas history ca. 1915-1918, specifically related to the German influence in the Texas Hill Country and in eastern Gillespie County;

Knowledge of cultural traditions, historic practices, and experiences;

Knowledge to develop, implement, manage, publicize, and evaluate related interpretive programs;

Knowledge to properly maintain artifacts and historic property;

Knowledge of authentic farming practices for the depicted time period;

Knowledge of authentic food way preparation and preservation practices;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;

Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment;

Skill in using farm equipment and blacksmithing tools;

Skill in working with livestock such as milk cows, swine, sheep, horses, mules, and all associated farm animals;

Ability to work well with diverse groups and age ranges;

Ability to work under little or no supervision;

Ability to work as a member of a team;

Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;

Ability to effectively and properly demonstrate various historic living history activities to the public using a variety of artifacts, replicas, and related techniques;

Ability to use a wood-burning stove and primitive types of farm and household equipment, machines, and appliances;

Ability to make repairs and perform minor maintenance to buildings, facilities and equipment using carpentry, electrical, plumbing and mechanic skills;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program;

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.


Additional Information:
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Required to work 40 hours per week with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Hours may be reduced or extended as needed;

Required to adjust to changing schedules;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

Required to travel 15%;

Required to operate a State vehicle;
