Quantitative Researcher: Applied Mathematics
Science | San Francisco / St Louis / Seattle, United States
Position Overview:
The Climate Corporation is looking for an applied mathematician with interests in numerical modeling of complex environmental systems. This position is within our Data Science group, which leverages numerical modeling, big data and cloud computing to address scientific challenges in precision agriculture. The team builds predictive models that are used directly by farmers, agronomists and consultants to optimize their management programs and economic returns.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development and optimization of novel process-based models of chemical, biological and physical phenomena affecting agronomic outcomes on agricultural fields. A strong area of emphasis for this role is model diagnostics and discovery of model structural improvement opportunities via model/data integration or other means. Additional areas of interest include numerical solutions to partial differential equations, adaptive space/time discretization, fluid dynamics, and stochastic modeling. Strong quantitative and scientific computing skills are essential for this role. In addition, the candidate should be enthusiastic about adapting their skills to new domain science areas.
What You Will Do:
- Build, test and refine complex process models of soil and crop conditions on agricultural fields
- Discover and implement model improvements that enhance predictive skill
- Work closely with a team of world-class scientists, engineers and mathematicians to deliver impactful scientific research
- Derive meaningful insights from integration of large and diverse datasets with process models
- Communicate research results to various audiences, including non-technical audiences, in the form of model documentation, white papers, and presentations
Basic Requirements
- PhD in Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, or related discipline
- 2+ years experience with simulation modeling of complex systems (e.g. working with predictive models from a field such as climatology, ecology, biogeochemistry, etc.)
- Experience linking measurement data with process-based models (e.g. via data assimilation, parameter estimation, optimization and/or performance testing)
- Strong proficiency with scientific computing in an interpreted language (such as Python, R or Matlab)
Preferred Requirements
- Experience with computational techniques including numerical solutions to partial differential equations, adaptive time stepping and adaptive grid refinement
- Experience with fluid dynamics or thermodynamic modeling
- Experience with stochastic process modeling
- Familiarity with soil processes (e.g. soil physics, soil organic or inorganic chemistry)
