Description:
Reporting to the Director, Business Development and Diversification (BDD), the Senior Proposal Writer leads the writing and editing of proposals for a range of US and non-US donor agencies, in addition to private sector and foundation funders. The Senior Proposal Writer integrates various sources of information into a uniform style and language in response to requests for proposals/applications, working closely with program design leads, proposal managers and technical experts. The position requires a high-level blend of technical and management capabilities.
Job Summary / Responsibilities:
Specifically, the Senior Proposal Writer:
- Collaborates as a key member with teams in upstream capture processes to lay the groundwork for strategic, contextualized proposal documents;
- Participates as a lead member on teams in design discussions, documenting the proceedings to inform proposal development;
- Writes and develops original proposal content on assignment from proposal design leads, researching the topic to aid strategy and technical development as necessary;
- Leads the synthesis of material from the range of assigned technical writers to develop proposals with uniform style and voice; at all times analyzing the text against narrative requirements to determine what additional resources are necessary to deliver an excellent proposal;
- Submits multiple drafts for team reviews, incorporating comments from reviewers in liaison with proposal design leads and technical writers;
- Upon submission of final proposal drafts, catalogs technical sections in liaison with Knowledge Management staff for the record and for future use;
- Builds and develops capacity of internal staff in conceptualizing and writing winning proposal content, both within BDD and with the technical areas;
- Manages and leads a growing team of FHI 360 proposal writers and editors on the BDD team, including the coaching, training and mentoring of employees;
- Maintains and guides the FHI 360’s database of skilled, highly qualified consulting writers and editors;
- Travels to focus countries for assignments as required (10-20% travel).
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent in Technical Communication, English, or related field.
Experience: 8+ years of developing, writing, and editing materials for technical publications, including publications relating to business development; 5+ years managing the publication process including supervising writing and editing staff.
Skills: Works on problems of complex scope requiring analysis or interpretation of various factors. Exercises judgment within selecting methods and techniques to determine appropriate action. Builds productive working relationships with internal and external staff.
Technology: Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), e-mail, telephone, printer, calculator, copier, cell phones, PDAs and other hand held devices.
