United States of America: Climate Change Communications Project Manager


Rationale and context of the assignment


The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication comprises Web, Social Media and Multimedia teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, DSS draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability.


DSS seeks to hire a consultant (Climate Change Communications Project Manager) is responsible for leading and expanding UNICEF’s efforts to engage adolescents and youth on the issue of climate change. This role is the Digital Strategy Section’s focal point for the Division of Communication’s efforts in coordinating climate specific engagement activities as well as working under the broader umbrella of adolescent and youth engagement.


The consultant is responsible for leading on UNICEF’s digital communication on climate change, developing a ‘youth engagement on climate change’ work plan, identifying and establishing new partnerships and growing existing ones, with both internal and external partners. The consultant is also responsible for the overall coordination of existing climate change flagship initiatives (Voices of Youth Maps – digital mapping) and expansion of existing and complementary initiatives into new markets, ensuring that children and youth are engaged on issues of climate change in a meaningful and sustainable manner. He/she will ensure that the voices of children and youth are reflected in UNICEF’s communication and advocacy on the issue of climate change, and will work with partners, both internal and external, to engage and activate children and youth on issues of climate change and climate action.

Responsibilities


  • Support internal and external communication on the role of adolescents and youth in addressing climate change, including strategy and writing for digital and social media.

  • Ensure that the voices of children and youth on climate change are amplified through child and youth-produced blogs and multimedia products.

  • Develop and oversee the production of communications materials and products such as blogs, web stories, videos and webinars to document and promote the initiative.

  • Work closely with DSS, Media and Public Advocacy sections to ensure that UNICEF communications and public advocacy on climate change prominently feature the first-person experiences and narratives of children and youth, to complement scientific data.

  • Coordinate global Voices of Youth Maps – digital mapping projects and ensure expansion into new markets.

  • Train In-Country Coordinators, UNICEF office Focal Points, Educators, and/or Partner Organizations’ Coordinators in the use of the digital mapping platform.

  • Develop media training, curricula, and digital advocacy resources for digital mapping.

  • Identify new and complementary initiatives to engage children and youth on issues of climate change.

  • Coordinate the upgrade and development of the Voices of Youth Maps digital mapping platform, and conduct regular technical assessments of the platform and application to ensure compatibility with new devices and operating systems.

  • Conduct the monitoring and evaluation of climate change communications and mapping initiatives.

  • Coordinate engagement on climate change with other key stakeholders, including Programme Division, Adolescent Development and Participation, Innovation, as well as with regional and country offices, ensuring alignment of messaging and priorities.

  • Identify and support partnerships with external partners who can amplify the voices of children and youth on climate change as well as those who can engage their own networks of children and youth.
