Position Summary:
HIAS seeks a Director, Institutional Development to develop and lead the strategic direction and
management of the Institutional Giving unit, in order to promote and increase support for our mission
and programs. S/he manages and grows the general operating fund as well as restricted and special
project grant revenue and has significant external responsibilities for building relationships with the
leadership of major local and national foundations in addition to directing the internal grant seeking
process.
Essential Functions:
External Responsibilities
· Maintain ongoing awareness of the specific opportunities and challenges within the corporate and foundation funder community.
· Build and grow our network of relationships that support institutional giving growth.
· Maintain focus on seizing new opportunities, planned approaches and solid execution to support institutional giving.
· Create strategic relationships between external partners, public media colleagues and internal leaders to achieve best-in-class institutional giving outcomes.
· Cultivate relationships with major funders and prospects to broaden networks, identify potential funding opportunities and solicit support.
· Work with VP/Development to engage Development Committee members and members of the Board of Trustees to cultivate relationships with major funders and prospects to broaden networks, identify potential funding opportunities, and solicit support.
· Broadly communicate the overall HIAS strategy for grant funding.
Internal Responsibilities
· Work with senior management and finance to identify ongoing and potential projects suitable for grant funding.
· Lead staff in the creation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of annual and multi- year grant funding strategies designed to maximize financial support.
· Lead staff in researching and identifying potential funders and creating strategies.
· Lead the writing and editing of fundable proposals.
· Facilitate cross-functional teams as necessary for grant development and fulfillment.
· Provide overall oversight of the grant seeking and grants administration processes.
· Implement a process and develop materials for regular communications with funders and prospects.
· Work with Director of Major Gifts to maximize potential for institutional support.
· Oversee annual budget and forecasting for Institutional Giving department.
· Hire, supervise, train, and manage staff; provide on-going performance feedback; provide annual
· written review; provide on-going coaching and support; and develop individualized development plans.
· Foster a creative and productive work environment.
· Create development opportunities for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
Qualifications and Requirements:
· Undergraduate degree required; Graduate degree preferred.
· Excellent demonstrated writing and editing skills.
· Exceptional communicator and relationship builder with a strong sense of vision, a collaborative work style and the capacity to engage support and supporters for HIAS.
· Experienced leader with a proven track record of staff supervision.
· Ability to conceptualize issues, design solutions, make decisions and effectively implement program and administrative strategies and activities.
· Positive can-do attitude, approachable manner, flexible workstyle.
· Ability to work in team environment, to delegate, and to support colleagues at all levels of the organization.
· Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to meet deadlines in a fast past environment.
· Able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Knowledge of the Jewish community and international refugee issues.
· A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.
· Extensive experience working in the foundation world.
· Minimum eight (8) years development experience in securing significant grants from corporations, foundations and/or government institutions.
· Minimum ten {10) years of management, departmental strategic and annual planning and leading teams to achieve results.
· Experience building strong relationships with major regional and national foundations; proven success in building relationships with new funders resulting in funding support.
· Demonstrated track record in producing excellent written materials and successful solicitations, resulting in consistently winning five and six figure-plus grants.
· Previous experience in researching and identifying major new funding prospects.
· Significant financial and budget management experience and skills.
· Prior experience managing a talented team; demonstrated ability to recruit and develop staff with high standards, demonstrating an ability to coach, inspire and lead.
