Primary Purpose of Position:
HIAS seeks a Grant Writer to be responsible for building capacity within the Institutional Development team with proposal writing for corporations, foundations and government agencies. Based in either in Silver Spring, MD (HQ) or New York City, s/he works closely with the External Affairs team and Global Programs division to add depth and breadth to HIAS’ programmatic work through diversifying HIAS’ portfolio of global donors in an effort to promote HIAS and increase institutional support for our mission and programs. S/he also maintains HIAS’ current grant portfolio overseas while expanding funding opportunities for HIAS’ programmatic work.
Essential Functions:
External Responsibilities
· Maintains ongoing familiarity of specific opportunities within US and international OECD/DAC donors and UN organizations that align with HIAS’ priorities.
· Builds and grows HIAS’ network of relationships that support program-related development opportunities with private/ family and corporate foundations.
· Cultivates relationships with major funders and prospects to broaden networks, identifies potential funding opportunities, and solicit support.
· Broadly communicates the overall HIAS strategy for grant funding.
Internal Responsibilities
· Works with senior management and finance to identify ongoing and potential projects suitable for grant funding.
· Implements strategies to support staff in researching and identifying potential funders and assists in the writing and editing of proposals and budget development.
· Facilitates cross-functional teams as necessary for grant development and fulfillment.
· Liaises with Monitoring & Evaluation staff to develop and track indicators.
· Ensures quality information management related to grants by overseeing the regular maintenance of grant files, reporting calendars, and updating of HIAS record.
· Implements a process and develops materials for regular communications with funders and prospects.
· Enhances HIAS’ capacity to submit quality, competitive proposals, training field and HQ staff as needed on narrative and budget development, and develop indicators/objectives to track outcomes.
· Monitors donor trends and relevant grant-making rules and regulations for changes and developments.
· Represents HIAS and liaise with donor agencies and partners.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
· Undergraduate degree required; Graduate degree in Communications, English or another relevant field preferred.
· Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in proposal development, and grant writing.
· Experience in researching and identifying major new funding prospects.
· Previous experience with foundation funding; experience with US Government and European government donors a plus.
· Significant financial and budget management experience and skills.
· Previous professional or volunteer work in refugee assistance and/or international development; knowledge of social service and social justice programs in the Jewish community a plus.
· Exceptional communication and relationship building skills; must demonstrate a strong sense of vision, a collaborative work style, and the capacity to engage support and supporters for HIAS.
· Excellent leadership skills with a proven track record of staff supervision.
· Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment; able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
· Ability to travel occasionally.
· Proven management skills and ability to negotiate effectively with donors and partner agencies.
