United States of America: International Controller


Founded in 2002 by President William J. Clinton, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to strengthening integrated health systems around the world and expanding access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria and other illnesses. Based on the premise that business oriented strategy can facilitate solutions to global health challenges, CHAI acts as a catalyst to mobilize new resources and optimize the impact of these resources to save lives, via improved organization of commodity markets and more effective local management. By working in association with governments and other NGO partners, CHAI is focused on large scale impact and, to date, CHAI has secured lower pricing agreements for treatment options in more than 70 countries. In addition, CHAI’s teams are working side-by-side with over 30 governments to tackle many of the largest barriers to effective treatment and care.


CHAI’s Finance department has an immediate opening for an International Controller. This dynamic position represents the opportunity to contribute to defining trends and best practices in financial management for the Clinton Health Access Initiative. Reporting to the CFO, s/he will work closely with personnel within other cross-functional teams in Boston, Program Managers, accounting staff in the field, and senior management to maintain accounting policies and procedures to align operational best practices across the organization.


The International Controller is responsible for the accounting, payroll and accounts payable functions globally for CHAI as well as working closely with four Regional Finance Coordinators across Africa and Southeast Asia.


The successful candidate will be responsible for:


  • Directing the organization’s international and US accounting functions to ensure the appropriate operational and financial controls are in place

  • Overseeing all US and international accounting records, general accounting, project accounting, transactional accounting, financial statement preparation and analysis

  • Leading the annual global audit and tax filings and coordinating international statutory audits

  • Formulation and establishment of financial operations policies, procedures and systems to ensure timely and accurate reporting

  • Providing assistance to the senior leadership team with comprehensive analysis, forecasting and decision support as needed

  • Researching issues, analyzing problems, determining approaches, compiling data and preparing reports

  • Interfacing with and coordinating activities between various internal departments and country teams

  • Coaching, mentoring and developing a talented and growing workforce

  • Interpreting tax requirements, government regulations, and industry standards across multiple countries

  • Ensuring CHAI’s accounting practices meet US GAAP, donor compliance, internal policies and statutory requirements.

Qualifications:


  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience with at least seven years’ experience in accounting and three years’ experience in non-profit accounting

  • Five years’ experience as Accounting Director, Controller or equivalent

  • Bachelor’s degree; BA/BS in accounting and Advanced degree preferred

  • CPA is required

  • Superb written and oral communication skills

  • Superb problem identification, articulation, recommendation, and execution skills required

  • Strong degree of comfort partnering with the CFO and operating in a constantly changing and challenging environment where accounting best practices will be maintained by this role

  • Experience with IFRS, A-133, and a strong technical knowledge of the requirements for US GAAP

  • Knowledge of various financial operating systems, including QuickBooks, Agresso and BlackBaud’s Financial Edge

  • A solid grasp of both US and international finance issues including experience with foreign currency translations and consolidations

  • A high degree of proficiency in accounting programs and advanced MS Excel skills

  • Ability to implement and manage financial controls, while maintaining flexibility to find alternative solutions to global accounting/finance needs when necessary

  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently as well as with a team

  • Ability to travel internationally – approximately 2-3 trips per year

In addition to the requirements outlined above, preferred qualifications include:


  • International accounting or finance experience strongly preferred, particularly in Africa or Southeast Asia

  • High degree of diplomacy & prior experience working with teams globally/cross culturally

  • Prior experience managing & mentoring fellow team members

  • Prior experience implementing a new financial management system across an organization
