Operator Maintenance - Dept of Transportation - Virginia





Qualified candidate/candidates will perform a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance and manual labor. Equipment operation includes but is not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment. Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee; must be willing to work outside of normal work hours during emergency conditions. Staunton District/Lexington Residency coverage area includes Area Headquarters located in Covington, Kerrs Creek, Fancy Hill, Fairfield, McDowell, Monterey, Millboro Springs and Warm Springs. Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Demonstrated experience in equipment operation and performing preventive maintenance. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs. Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools and light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. Perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions. Must have minimum of Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL ) Learners Permit. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements preferred at time of hire, but must be obtained within 6 months of employment. Frequent travel is required.


Preferred Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent. Experience in the maintenance and/or construction of roadways. Prefer CDL with appropriate endorsements at time of hire.


Special Requirements

Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Selected applicant must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screening. Fingerprint-based background check required. Requires approved safety shoes. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies, inclement weather, and heavy traffic conditions.
