Organizational Background:
Heartland Alliance International (HAI) is the youngest and fastest growing part of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, a family of organizations that has been leading anti-poverty and social justice work in Chicago for more than 125 years. HAI is comprised of nearly a dozen country offices implementing programs on a broad range of human rights issues globally, as well as the Chicago-based Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture, which serves individuals from more than 50 countries. HAI has significant expertise in the fields of trauma-informed mental health care and access to justice for survivors of rights abuses. It is also an industry leader in access to high-quality and stigma-free health care. Across all of its programs, HAI promotes progressive, innovative approaches to human rights protections and gender equality.
Overview:
Heartland Alliance International recently finalized a five year strategic plan, which includes ambitious growth targets. Key to the success of those targets is the diversification of funding sources, with a focus on individual major donors. This consultancy has two key priorities: (1) identifying potential major donors that HAI might cultivate and (2) developing a strategy for cultivating the identified individuals.
Key Responsibilities:
· Conduct a document review and participate in meetings to better understand HAI’s current strategic plan, structure, and history with regard to cultivating major donors.
· Complete prospect research into potential new major donors, taking into account HAI’s international focus, its positioning in Chicago and as part of Heartland Alliance, and key areas of expertise in trauma-informed mental health and access to justice.
· Develop a strategy for stewardship for a select group of promising potential donors.
· Initiate contact (including relationship mapping and network tapping) between a select group of potential donors and HAI senior leadership.
· Train HAI staff on major donor identification, engagement, cultivation, and retention strategies.
Deliverables:
The Major Gifts Consultant will complete the deliverables below:
· Submit a report detailing at least 10 potential major donors who do not have a strong affiliation with the organization yet, with a stewardship strategy assigned to each one.
· Deliver an introductory training for key staff on donor identification, engagement, cultivation, and retention strategies
· Make a final presentation to HAI leadership summarizing the main contents of the report and communicating recommendations.
Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred); at least 8 years of experience with demonstrated successful fundraising experience in the major donor space.
· Experience asking for major, stretch, and planned gifts from prospective and current donors, and with developing relationships with prospects that have not had a strong affiliation with an organization.
· The selected candidate will demonstrate ability to analyze and learn about organizational culture, structure, opportunities, and constraints so as to deliver a tailored plan/set of recommendations.
· Demonstrated professionalism and ability to maintain organizational confidentiality;
· Strong written and oral communication skills, and demonstrated ability to write and clearly articulate ideas.
Timeline:
This assignment is expected to require about 15-20 working days starting in May 2016. Work must be completed and deliverables submitted by June 30, 2016.
