About the role
In this exciting, high-profile role you will provide expert advice to AI research staff on weapons identification and military affairs in order to protect human rights in armed conflict situations. You will conduct research / investigations, writing reports, briefings and press releases, conducting press work, and advocacy – all in difficult and often dangerous circumstances and with pressing deadlines. You will also lead the development of research standards and methodology in the areas of weapons identification and military strategies and tactics; advise staff on research methodologies, practice and standards on military affairs and observance of IHL in operations.
About you
With extensive experience of identifying small arms and a range of air and ground launched weapon types including conventional, nuclear, biological, chemical and other non-conventional weapons you have proven ability to analyse ordnance and to document use of particular weapons during field missions and based on evidence not physically present.
You express ideas in a fluent, clear and concise way in English and you have experience of drafting high-quality media materials and other documents, such as reports, action materials and government correspondence to tight timelines. With your expertise in weapon identification and military affairs you are able to give guidance to and develop guidance documents for researchers with non-technical/military expertise on how to collect physical evidence, images and testimony. You are also able to work independently, quickly and well under pressure, and deal comfortably with rapidly changing demands and situations.
