DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The American Red Cross (ARC) International Services Department (ISD) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and educating future humanitarians. POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Chief International Officer, this position is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the International Services Department, implementing its disaster response, preparedness and recovery programs. The VP, International Services leads the Department through change and transformation of its long term vision for impact and sustainability and ensures that resources are used effectively to maximize impact in line with donor expectations and best practices.
The position has wide latitude for day-to-day decision making and long term planning to ensure that department objectives are met, donor and organizational policies are implemented and risks are managed. The position is responsible for determining the department’s budget and human resource allocations and can commit the Department’s resources and initiate partnerships and programs with external partners.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the development and implementation of ISD’s strategy to respond, recover and prepare for disasters and to eradicate Measles.
- Oversee the optimization of program resources, including through operation models utilizing international Red Cross network actors or other external partners.
- Ensure the development and implementation of best practices for grant management, compliance, monitoring, evaluation, learning, and information management to support the most effective stewardship of program resources.
- Partner with Finance team to ensure strong financial management of the department’s budget and short- and long-term planning for sustainability, including cost recovery.
- Serve as ARC primary representative to leadership of IFRC, ICRC, and national societies in order to leverage ARC resources within the international Red Cross network to improve overall program effectiveness.
- Promote and establish ISD partnerships within and without the international Red Cross network in order to leverage ARC resources for greater programmatic impact.
- Represents ARC at external events and meetings, as appropriate.
- Provide active and engaged performance management and promotion of professional development.
- Promote and model behaviors in cross-unit collaboration and communication, foster an environment of cooperation and professional respect, support professional growth, and coach and mentor staff.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s degree in relevant social science discipline or business or equivalent experience required.
- Minimum 12 years work experience in international humanitarian organizations.
- Minimum 10 years management experience preferably working in multi-cultural environments.
- Must have the ability to develop strategies, prioritize and implement initiatives effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate staff to accomplish objectives in a difficult and rapidly changing environment is required.
- Extensive travel within the US and internationally.
- Ability to work in the United States without a current or future need for visa sponsorship or assistance.
