Capital Advisory Consultant – Transactional and Strategic
Proposed time commitment:*20 hours per week/2.5 days per week for 10-11 months. Further engagement TBD. Washington, DC or NYC-based. Some travel involved and can be flexible with independent consultant schedules and commitments.*
This is an opportunity to launch a new initiative for IESC: a Capital Advisory service for Small-and-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries. While launching and formalizing activities and processes for a new product line (internal), also essential is that the desired person be heavily involved in the process of sourcing, negotiating, structuring, and closing investment transactions for SME clients.
Tasks
Transaction Support
- Secure advisory contracts with high-potential SMEs operating in developing countries.
- Establish and manage the relationships of potential transaction sources, including direct connections with potential SME investees, IESC consultants, IESC field and HQ staff (and network of volunteers), investors, and other investment banking outfits.
- Initiate and drive the investment process through the introduction of the parties (borrower and investor/lender); negotiate, structure, and close transactions.
- Guide client companies through the investment process, including in the preparation of documents, the financial structure, financial projections/cash flows and in the discussion of legal issues and risks involved.
- Guide the core two-person team consisting of a Loan Origination Assistant and OPIC Coordinator in resource allocation and how best to close live transactions.
- Coordinate closely with IESC senior staff overseeing this product.
Strategic Advisory Support
- Continuously explore new sources of capital and unconventional types of funding, such as: impact investors; social impact bonds; loan securitizations; guarantee schemes; diaspora schemes; etc. for key sectors, e.g. energy and agriculture.
- Create and drive global and regional strategies and business plan for the Capital Advisory team.
- Set in place the proper processes, procedures, and safeguards to ensure that IESC does not endanger its mission, reputation, or its high quality standards.
- Coordinate closely with Financial Services practice, relevant Advisors/Board Members, and Volunteer Services and Economic Growth practices to share information and leverage IESC’s resources (e.g. volunteers) to help investees prepare investment proposals and close transactions.
Qualifications
- At least 7 years in commercial finance/banking, investment banking, or private equity.
- At least 4 years in driving the full life cycle of financial transactions (debt and/or equity), with an average size of at least $5 million each, including: deal sourcing (clients and funding sources); investment preparedness of clients; transaction structuring; negotiation; and closing.
- Strong understanding of the credit/investment underwriting process.
- Strong financial analysis, projections, and valuation skills.
- Ability to explore unconventional solutions and discover mutually beneficial solutions within difficult environments and complex structures.
- International transaction and development experience and a desire to be part of mission-oriented organization are necessary.
- Fluency in a second language is also an advantage but not required.
