The Operator career at VTA begins as an Operator Trainee. At the time of appointment as Operator Trainee, a candidate MUST possess a Class B permit with Passenger (P) endorsement AND receive a physical clearance that is valid for a minimum of six months. Upon successful completion of training, an Operator Trainee has the opportunity to be promoted to Operator.

The Operator Trainee pay is $16.17/hr for the duration of the training class. Upon graduation, an Operator Trainee will have the opportunity to promote to Operator and receive the pay reflected in this bulletin.


Definition

Under general supervision, an Operator transports passengers in a motor coach on a fixed route.

Essential Job Functions:


Typical Tasks


  • Operates a motor coach safely and in accordance with a designated schedule;

  • Picks up and drops off passengers at designated bus stops;

  • Collects fares and sells day passes;

  • Aids passengers in boarding or departing the motor coach as needed;

  • Operates the wheelchair lift when necessary and secures passengers’ wheelchairs;

  • Calls out stops and provides information to passengers;

  • Maintains order on the motor coach;

  • Operates a two-way radio;

  • Prepares accident and incident reports;

  • Keeps records;

  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:


Employment Standards

Training and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma and possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license at the time of appointment, and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Class B license.


Driving record may not have more than three (3) moving violations within the last three (3) years.


Must be eighteen (18) years of age at the time of application.

Must have a good attendance record at school and/or previous job.

Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and odd and unusual hours.

Examination

The examination may include the following: written test that evaluates basic mathematical skills and basic map reading (Pass or Fail) and a multiple choice customer service skills video examination (Pass or Fail). The examination process may be conducted during one or more testing sessions taking approximately up to 4-5 hours.

Candidates must pass all portions of the examination. Applicants who do not show up for their scheduled tests will not be rescheduled. There are no make-up or re-tests.


Applicants arriving late will not be admitted to the tests. Applicants will not be scheduled to participate in the examination process until their application is screened for minimum qualifications and completeness. Screening may take several weeks or months due to the number of applications received. Applicants may be scheduled for testing, placed on an eligible list and scheduled for interview based on the order in which completed applications are received/reviewed/or approved. Additionally, candidates may be scheduled for testing and interview as-needed. To achieve permanent status, new employees must successfully complete a training period of 8-9 weeks, followed by a probationary period.
