Nags Head Woods Preserve Assistant - The Nature Conservancy - Kill Devil Hills, NC





The Conservation Practitioner I performs and participates in preserve outreach, operations, and maintenance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


The Conservation Practitioner I position has a focus on Environmental Education and Outreach in Nags Head Woods Preserve, owned by The Nature Conservancy in North Carolina. S/he will work closely with conservation staff and partners to provide a meaningful experience for visitors to Nags Head Woods Preserve. S/he will also support Conservation staff with ongoing stewardship and restoration projects in the preserve as needed.


Key projects may include:


Environmental Education and Outreach (50%):


  • Design and lead tours in Nags Head Woods Preserve.

  • Research natural history and points of interest along preserve trails as talking points/signs for visitors.

  • Meets with conservation staff and partners in the field to help develop freshwater fish id signage and documents.

  • Use GPS to record points of interest along trails.

  • Use audio editing software to process recordings into short audio segments.

  • Use GIS to develop trail maps showing points of interest.

  • Collect still and video footage of nature sights on the preserves.

  • Greet the public and answering questions related to Nags Head Woods Preserve.

  • Record visitor logs in excel.

  • Attend and participate in Coastal Environmental Education Network Meetings (CEEN) or other events.

Preserve Stewardship Support (30%):

  • Assist with preserve stewardship projects including, invasive plant management, hiking trail maintenance, and herpetology study support.

  • Assist with design and development of fishing trial and platforms

  • Assist Conservation staff with ongoing native plant and oyster restoration projects as needed.

General Office Support (20%):

  • Assist with electronic file archiving.

  • Assist with GIS file management.

  • Proficiency and willingness to promote NHWP on social media.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Will interact with visitors.

  • Works under close or infrequent supervision.

  • May work in variable weather conditions, in isolated settings, and under minor physically demanding circumstances.

  • Requires minor physical exertion and/or muscular strain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma and 6 months of related experience.

  • Clear communication skills via written, spoken, and graphical means in English.

  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, web browsers, Google Earth, online mapping tools)

  • Experience or coursework using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce maps.

  • Experience using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) units in the field.

  • Experience with organization skills, attention to detail and working independently.

  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, boat, kayak or canoe, etc).

  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver’s license).

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION


This an 8 week internship during the May-August timeframe paying $8.00 per hour.
