United States of America: Program Associate, Community Engagement


HIAS seeks a Program Associate to provide programmatic and administrative support for the Community Engagement’s national and priority city-based programming, assuming responsibility for key elements of each. The national and priority city programming includes: education programs, speaking engagements and speakers’, tours, volunteer programs, and campaign events. S/he is responsible for supporting and collaborating on the implementation and refinement of national programs to engage the American Jewish community in HIAS’ work with refugees. HIAS’ commitment to public programming, which includes widespread education, speakers’ tours, partnerships, public events and volunteer opportunities nationally and in key cities – is part of a multi-pronged Community Engagement strategy that also includes grassroots advocacy and organizing in select cities. The Program Associate is a critical member of a reasonably new department undertaking a significantly increased commitment to HIAS’ Jewish communal engagement.


Essential Functions:


  • Collaborate with the Director, Community Engagement and the other Program Associate to develop and implement HIAS programs in target cities as well as supporting campaign events and programs.

  • Research and identify opportunities for conferences in which HIAS should participate and/or present, and manage all logistics related to participation.

  • Manage internal processes and all logistics for the annual HIAS speaker’s tour, from initial planning to evaluation.

  • Generalist Portfolio Responsibilities: (all shared with the other Program Associate)

  • Cultivate relationships with HIAS constituents in target cities, and nationally, with a focus on young adults and baby boomers; develop programs, connect people to campaign, educate people on volunteer opportunities, and strengthen HIAS’ brand identity.

  • Collaborate with the Director, Community Engagement in the development and implementation of Community Engagement programs including: logistics (coordination of publicity and outreach, vendor contracts, marketing & registration, and event data processing & analysis); collaborating with partner and co-sponsoring organizations; and systematic program evaluation.

  • Support and collaborate with the Director, Community Engagement to identify, build and strengthen partnerships with organizations that will advance HIAS’ efforts to educate, organize and mobilize the American Jewish community around refugee issues.

  • Develop materials, in partnership with the HIAS Communications department, for program- related events and activities and organizational marketing.

  • Conduct research as needed to enrich and support the implementation of the Community Engagement program strategy.

  • Develop and maintain internal Community Engagement department systems to capture and track all program activities and metrics, in relation to specified goals, objectives and indicators of success, in coordination with the other Community Engagement Program Associate and Special Assistant to the Vice President, Community Engagement.

  • Support proposal and report writing for the HIAS Development department about national programs.

  • Provide support for City Directors’ local programming and administrative assistance for members of the community engagement team as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Undergraduate degree required.

  • Minimum of two years of professional experience; demonstrated skills in the areas of program development, event planning, and facilitation/ informal education.

  • Knowledge of and experience with social change efforts; experience working and/or volunteering in the Jewish community a plus; experience with advocacy campaigns and in planning campaign events preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills, excellent attention to detail and an appreciation for the importance of logistical work; excellent judgement and problem-solving skills; exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Flexible work style and demonstrated team building skills; ability to build relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Quick, creative and entrepreneurial, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and opportunities.

  • Experience with data collection and analysis a plus; savvy social media and marketing skills preferred.

  • Full status to work in the U.S. and willingness to provide employment verification as required.

  • Ability and willingness to work some evenings and weekends, as well as travel domestically.
