PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Global Partnerships and Alliances Intern will support the Global Partnerships and Alliances Team (GPAT) in three primary ways: 1) market and partner research for GPAT value propositions related to youth, digital and financial inclusion, and resilience/energy access (this will primarily consist of online research related to the markets and partnership landscapes in each sector, helping the team to prioritize geographies for partnership sourcing activities and will also include internal agency research on existing partners in target countries and key programmatic initiatives that relate to each sector); 2) supporting GPAT’s internal communications efforts (this will include the drafting of internal communications pieces and assisting GPAT team members in inputting partner information into the team’s partner tracking matrix) ; and 3) administrative support (including assisting the team on putting together general purchasing requests, communicating with different vendors to get quotes for the prices of certain services, organizing conference calls, and booking conference rooms).


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


  1. Gain a general understanding of some of the ways in which international non-governmental organizations perform partnership mapping, development and strategy-setting.

  2. From start to finish, gain experience producing (including research, writing and formatting) concise and targeted research reports to inform team strategy-setting.

  3. Through research, gain an in-depth understanding of the markets and partner landscapes associated with each of the value proposition sectors (youth, digital and financial inclusion, and resilience/energy access).

  4. Gain experience with internal agency communication strategies, tools, and collaboration platforms.

  5. Get exposure to some of the key administrative processes associated with day-to-day team management that provide an understanding of INGO processes and functioning.

DELIVERABLES:


  1. Three to five page report for each of the three value propositions that are of shareable quality internally at Mercy Corps.

  2. At least two internal communication pieces written and published in Mercy Corps’ internal newsletter

  3. A completed matrix highlighting GPAT priority geographies for team field outreach activities

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in a relevant field to international development. The intern should be a self-starter that is organized and able to work independently. A good understanding of the way markets work, and a strong background in research and writing is desirable. Ability to juggle many projects at once and approach situations with a positive attitude and a sense of humor is important.


LIVING CONDITIONS: This internship will be based in Mercy Corps’ Portland, Oregon headquarters.


Mercy Corps interns and volunteers represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC’s policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
