Under the direction of Ventanilla de Salud (VDS) Program Coordinator, responsible for driving a health education (cargo) van one day a week to provide preventive health education, outreach, and referral to the Ventanilla de Salud Program (VDS). This position is responsible for driving and navigation, but will also provide basic outreach and health education, in collaboration with another VDS staff member. Must be able to effectively communicate with patients and other staff, in English and Spanish.
Driving Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides driving services to different addresses throughout San Diego County, including North County, in a safe and reliable manner.
- Uses technology to determine best routes to destinations.
- Loads, unloads, prepares, inspects and operates assigned vehicle.
- Performs maintenance of mobile health van, including replenishment of supplies, refilling gas, checking tire air pressure, and cleaning the unit on a regular basis.
- Completes activity, travel, and mileage logs and reports on a daily basis.
- Schedules unit for preventative and maintenance in accordance with agency prescribed schedules.
- Reports all safety and maintenance concerns to supervisor immediately.
- Other duties as assigned.
Health Education Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide basic preventive health education presentations, especially related to chronic disease, in the designated areas of reach by the mobile van.
- Provide basic information/education related to the clients’ identified health needs.
- Provide information and collect health related data.
- Make referrals to appropriate community health clinics in San Diego.
- Complete assessment and evaluation tools and enter data as needed, collect qualitative data and maintains relevant project data per grant/contract specifications.
- Ensure all necessary health material supplies are organized and prepared for educational activities
- Document all health education activities.
Performs all other duties as deemed necessary by the Project Director and VDS Program Coordinator. Required Skills
Clear driving record and valid California Driver’s License
3-5 years as a licensed driver
Comfort driving a cargo van & using navigation technology
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Good basic computer skills
- High School Diploma, GED, or higher
- Must be able to work one Saturday each month
- Must have the legal right to work in the U.S.
- Reliable transportation
- 2+ years’ experience working in health, psychology, or social work field
- Knowledge about bicultural issues related to Mexican Consulate
- Knowledge of Mexican and US health care systems, exposure to binational or international collaborative programs
- Able to work independently and as a team-player
- Creativity in problem solving
- Knowledge of health insurance programs and related eligibility requirements, preferred
