Sackler Foundation, established The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science to create a coordinated effort to support and disseminate nutrition science by bringing together experts on nutrition across academic, clinical, public health and government sectors for the first ever Global Research Agenda on nutrition science. POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Academy is seeking an Executive Director for The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science to advance the Institute’s Global Research Agenda. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a dynamic and accomplished scientist to join a highly respected scientific institution and to play a critical role in addressing the global nutrition challenges of our era.
The Executive Director will work with the Academy team and its partner organizations to create and deliver high-impact, innovative projects to drive and support research aligned with the Global Research Agenda. The Executive Director will use these successful initiatives to build The Sackler Institute’s global image and expand its range of opportunities.
Working in collaboration with the Academy team and Resource Development staff, the Executive Director will play a significant role in securing the financial resources required to sustain and grow The Institute’s initiatives and program portfolio. The Executive Director will also work in close coordination with other Academy programmatic departments to leverage the Academy’s strengths in fulfilling The Institute’s mission.
The Executive Director will manage the operations and staff of the Institute and will report to the COO of The Academy.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities of the Executive Director will include, but not be limited to:
Strategic Leadership & Vision: Provide the strategic leadership and vision needed to move forward the Institute’s research agenda, networks, and programs in order to fulfill the Institute’s mission. Use the Global Research Agenda to stimulate research, innovation, and action on key research priorities; utilize research findings to drive on-the-ground policy and practice change; translate research into projects that can be implemented in the field. Establish effective partnerships with the UN, national governments, the major global NGOs such as GAIN and SUN, and build meaningful long-term relationships with industries.
Financial: Develop and implement a successful financial plan that leverages and builds upon the core funding. Manage and oversee the Institute’s fiscal well-being: develop and monitor the annual budget; review cash/business forecasts, making timely corrections and adjustments, as required; ensure that appropriate policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures are maintained.
Fundraising: Work in partnership with the Academy’s Resource Development team and existing network to define outreach strategies and lead efforts to secure resources to ensure that the nutrition-science research community continues to address cutting-edge problems and to nurture future generations of scientists to build research capacity. Identify opportunities for fundraising, collaboration and attracting new stakeholders.
Operations: Use the Academy’s core competencies as a neutral and respected convener to lead efforts to design and host programs and events to enable researchers, government representatives, NGOs, and other stakeholders to build networks and collaborate to share knowledge and experiences and to motivate and create on the ground proof-of-concept programs that advance the integration of science into practice. Manage the day-to-day operations of the Institute, fully utilizing existing talent and programs to ensure that the operations of the Institute are thoroughly integrated with those of the Academy; manage and allocate critical and shared resources for maximum impact.
Leadership: Inspire, motivate and lead a team by establishing key performance goals and evaluating performance against those identified goals. Mentor and develop staff through a supportive and collaborative team approach, fostering cross-program synergy, transparency and coordination to promote a culture of high performance, quality, excellence and continuous improvement.
EDUCATION:
- An M.D., Ph.D., or M.D. /Ph.D. degree in nutrition, public health, or a closely related scientific field.
EXPERIENCE, COMPETENCIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in a scientific, academic, medical, government or non-profit organization working in the biomedical field with exposure to nutrition science.
- Extensive knowledge of scientific research in the fields of nutrition, public health and related areas. Additionally, s/he will have in-depth experience negotiating with multi-sector stakeholders and will possess the business skills and the strategic awareness required to navigate the complex field of nutrition. Must have a track record of successfully securing funding and overseeing public/ private partnerships.
- Possess considerable professional stature and presence coupled with the engagement and communication skills required to attract and grow the network of stakeholders dedicated to The Institute’s long-term success. To excel in this position, the Executive Director will need to be extremely collaborative, collegial, and committed to the highest standards of research and scientific integrity. Must have a track record of successfully building high impact programs.
- A proven leader, with evidence of building trust and credibility with key leaders in the field of nutrition, including researchers, government representatives, administrators of NGOs, members of private industry, and the policy community.
- Excellent financial, analytical, and process skills; capable of synthesizing complex data and making sound recommendations. Business experience with funding coming from multiple sources is highly desirable.
- A transformational thinker, highly diplomatic and discreet. Unquestionable personal integrity and a commitment to the highest ethical standards; exudes credibility and professionalism; quickly builds confidence in others.
