Day Camp – General oversight of outdoor-based summer day camp and after school program including marketing, participant registration, staff supervision, and program development.
Therapeutic Recreation – Planning, facilitating, and evaluating programs for people with disabilities in both inclusive and specialized settings.
Teens – Developing meaningful and responsive city-wide programs for diverse groups of teens.
Youth Sports – Oversight of development and expansion of seasonal, citywide youth sports programs including, but not limited to: baseball, basketball, and flag football.
Volunteers/Special Events – Recruit, train and retain community volunteers to assist with a variety of division/department-wide programs and special events.
Environmental Education – Assists with all aspects of operation of Berkeley’s Marina Environmental Education Program at the Shorebird Park Nature Center, including educating all ages on the history and ecology of the San Francisco Bay Area.
The current vacancy focuses in the areas of Teens, Volunteers and Special Events.
In order to be considered for any of the City’s permanent or temporary vacancies for Assistant Recreation Coordinator during the next year, you must submit an employment application, resume, responses to the supplemental questionnaire prior to the application deadline and pass all examination process.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from high school,
AND
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in recreation program planning, coordination or leadership. College level coursework in recreation, physical education or a closely related field may be substituted for the experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Recreation program activities including games, hobbies and athletics; Team sport scheduling including selection and coordination of team schedules; Basic supervisory principles and practices; Rules and regulations related to team sports; Community recreation needs for all age groups; Basic principles of first aid.
Ability to: Motivate and provide encouragement for participation in recreation programs and team sports; Implement multi faceted sports and recreation programs; Identify community recreation needs and recommend programs to fulfill them; Plan, staff and schedule sports events and other recreational activities; Administer first aid for minor injuries; Exercise sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines; Prepare clear and complete reports of program activities and other written correspondence; Maintain organized and accurate records of team schedules and rosters and other recreational activities; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring department(s) will use to conduct final selection interviews. Hiring Department(s) will contact applicants directly if selected to participate in their hiring/selection process.
Candidates under final consideration for employment with the City should expect to undergo an employment background / reference check that may include, but is not limited to: employment history, confirmation of educational credentials and degrees, licenses including driver’s license, registrations, certificates, and other credentials as part of the appointment process. Recreation positions require TB testing before hiring.
