About Wake County Public Libraries

Wake County Public Libraries (WCPL), a division of Community Services, is a decentralized library system devoted to promoting the love of reading and fostering the pursuit of knowledge among the citizens of Wake County. To be a successful library system, WCPL focuses on three factors: developing products people love, operating facilities that are well thought out, and providing experiences that are pleasant. WCPL products include books and collections that people want; access to the Internet and other digital services that are easy to use; and programs that are engaging and educational. Library services are supportive of the Commissioner’s goals, as evident in the adoption of the Library Master Plan by the Board of Commissioners. In surveys to its customers, 96.6% of respondents rated their experience with the libraries as excellent or good. Per year, WCPL circulates over 11,000,000 books, has over 3,500,000 visitors, and presents over 8,000 programs. Its annual budget is approximately 19.9 million.

WCPL is currently comprised of 220 FTE which will expand to almost 240 by the end of FY 16. Administration consists of a Director, Deputy Director, four Senior Managers each responsible for a major system resource, and a Management & Policy Analyst. There is also a Staff Development Manager focused on training and development for staff. The library system is made up of 6, soon to be 7, Regional Libraries which range in size from 20,000 sq. ft. to 30,000 sq. ft.; 12 Community Libraries which range in size from 5,000 sq. ft. to 10,000 sq. ft., 2 Specialty Libraries, including a local history and genealogy library, and a Digital Library focused on the libraries’ online presence and PR. Libraries is the only county division to have its own Information Technology department.

WCPL is consistently one of the busiest and most cost effective library systems in NC. Specifically, the library system continues to expand its innovative and popular program of service for the young child, the school age child, teens, and adults of all ages. In 2015, the Deputy Library Director won a prestigious award from the American Library Association for showing exceptional understanding and support of public library service to children. The library system has been fortunate to be the recipient of generous grants over the years that have allowed it to offer special programming and exhibits to enhance its regular schedule of programming.
