Library Service Associates provide customers with assistance using a wide range of library services, from accessing library materials, to providing customer service and training. Library Service Associates work under the general supervision of Librarians and Supervisors to perform tasks essential to the day-to-day operations of the Library.
Essential Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Assists customers with using the Library– 60-70%
Meets customers’ needs for information by answering reference questions and locating appropriate library resources
Provides help with library technology such as public computers, the library catalog and digital resources
Provides programming support for other Library employees, or presents events and programs under the guidance of Librarian staff
Recommends books and other materials based on customer preferences and knowledge of the collection
Assists customers in finding specific items on shelves
Performs customer service for library accounts
2. Maintains library collections – 20-30%
Withdraws items from the collection based on prepared lists or at the direction of Librarian staff
Updates item information in the library database
Prepares, repairs and reconditions library materials on a limited basis
Maintains the order and neatness of collections throughout the Library by shelving, shelf reading, and shifting as necessary
3. Conducts the day-to-day operations of a department – 10-20%
Assists with training and monitoring the work of other Library employees and volunteers
Submits statistics and other reports of library services
Performs other clerical tasks as needed or assigned
Maintains a pleasant, inviting environment in the Library by monitoring behavior, creating displays and signage, etc.
SECONDARY DUTIES:
a. Assists with large-scale projects and events
b. Serves on system-wide committees as assigned or required
c. Serves as a selection team member in hiring new department employees
d. Attends staff and departmental meetings
e. Participates in training sessions
f. Recruits and coordinates the work of library volunteers
g. Sets or coordinates staff and volunteer schedules
h. Performs other related duties as needed or assigned
Minimum Qualifications Required:
Education and Experience
Two years of college or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
· Basic knowledge of library operations, services and materials
· Strong verbal and written communication skills
· Ability to assess users’ needs and provide consistently exceptional customer service
· Ability to represent the Library in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner
· Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment
· Ability to maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances
· Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions
· Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
· Ability to work efficiently while paying close attention to detail

· Ability to make presentations to varying sized groups of children and adults
· Ability to effectively coordinate and direct the work of others
· Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and the public

· General mathematics skills
· Basic general computer skills, including keyboarding, word processing and email
· Library computer skills, including searching, circulation and database use
· Ability to use library and general office equipment, including computer, printer, photocopier, telephone, cash register and audio-visual equipment
