This is general office work and moderately complex and specialized clerical work.
An employee in this class is responsible for performing one or more clerical assignments of average difficulty, which may include receptionist, customer service, cashiering, personnel records keeping, financial records keeping, purchasing records keeping, confidential and police records keeping, and other activities. Some positions may require the operation of typewriters, photocopy machines, terminals, and other standard office equipment for which no previous training is needed. Under general supervision, employee receives instructions orally or in writing and performs tasks in accordance with established procedures. The employee is expected to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in addition to reasonable initiative, tact and courtesy when contact with the public and other employees is involved. Supervision may be exercised on an assigned or temporary basis over subordinate personnel. At times, night and/or weekend work may be necessary. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for completeness, accuracy and conformance with established procedures.

THE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Have successfully graduated from a standard high school or possess a G.E.D. certificate from a recognized issuing agency.
2. Must have a minimum of one (1) year full-time paid work experience performing general office or clerical work.
THE EXAMINATION AND HOW TO APPLY:
Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.
An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran’s preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale’s veteran’s preference claim form ( J204 ).
This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by TEAMSTERS and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and TEAMSTERS Local Union 769.
