- This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife located in Lakeview.

Duties & Responsibilities
The Assistant District Fish Biologist will assist in the implementation of all actions that are required to carry out the department’s Fish Program within the district. S/he will assist by planning, assigning and coordinating monitoring and inventory activities, collecting data, performing statistical analysis and interpretation of biological information, written communication and making management recommendations to the District Biologist. The position is located in the Lakeview field office and the incumbent must work independently as a field representative of the department. The position also serves as the department representative when commenting on land and water use issues affecting fish and providing information to groups regarding the agency’s fish programs, activities and related topics. Major duties and responsibilities are to:
- Complete biological surveys. Determine inventory methodology by analyzing advantages of different techniques; review data, literature and past records. Determine necessary sample sizes to answer question. Determine fish species composition, fish population distribution, fish population abundance, trends in fish abundance, fish production, estimate mortality rates, male/female sex ratios and estimate age classes of fish using inventories. Interview anglers on lakes and streams to determine effort and species caught. Conduct statistical analysis of fisheries data and interpret the data analysis. Communicate results of work and inventory analysis orally, with scientific writing or professional presentation to staff and peers. Recommend harvest regulations based on inventory analysis for population protection and management. Recommend appropriate use of hatchery fish based on analysis including species, strain, number and size and location. Assist with fish stocking by foot, truck, boat, or air.
- Respond to requests for information and complaints/concerns from public or other agencies. Provide expertise and technical assistance to landowners and public. Negotiate corrective actions with landowners and agencies as required while protecting fish and habitat. Make presentations to schools, civic organizations, special interest groups, peers and other agencies. Record and relay information on fish and wildlife violations to Oregon State Police (OSP).
- Compile and write informational reports. Write monthly, annual, species and stock status reports. Write official letters and memorandums. Assist in writing of basin plans. Write grant applications.
- Protect and enhance fish habitat. Coordinate and work with applicants and partners that plan or propose activities in streams or lakes; these could include individuals, companies or public agencies. Evaluate effects of stream and lake alterations on fish populations. Determine potential effects of land management activities on fish including: logging, road building, water withdrawals, land use changes, construction, zone changes, agriculture, grazing, fill and removal of streams and wetlands. Determine potential effects of water withdrawal structures and barriers on fish passage. Investigate fish kills and total numbers and species killed. Investigate water pollution in streams and lakes and provide information to proper authority for resolution. Evaluate fish habitat needs and recommend appropriate restoration actions. Cooperate with other agencies, watershed councils, landowners, contractors and volunteers to coordinate or implement habitat manipulations.
Working Conditions
- Work alone or as part of a group in remote locations and in inclement weather.
- Requires physical ability to travel on foot in all types of terrain and extreme weather conditions carrying heavy weight or backpacks. Travel by vehicle, often on unimproved roads, occasionally in inclement weather. Occasional work in aircraft, such as helicopters and small fixed wing planes. Occasional overnight travel is required.
- Respond to environmental emergencies, such as hazardous material spills. This position requires Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training certification to respond to hazardous material spill events. - This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. - This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals and birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters. The successful candidate will be subject to an initial criminal history background check with fingerprinting to verify s/he may legally possess a firearm before using a firearm, and will be subject to annual criminal history checks thereafter. Continued employment is contingent upon passing the criminal history background check.
- Must be able to work and communicate effectively with ODFW staff, other government agencies, private landowners and members of the public.
- This position has been designated as sensitive in that the incumbent in this position has access to confidential/fiscal-related information. The successful candidate will be subject to an initial criminal history background check with fingerprinting and will be subject to annual criminal history checks thereafter. Continued employment is contingent upon passing the criminal history background check.
- Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work occasional weekends, holidays and evening, including long and unusual hours.
NOTE: You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will check driving records for in-state finalists. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current driving record for review.

Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; or three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program; OR
- One year of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Master’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Master’s degree in biological/ecological sciences; OR
- A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences.

The Master’s degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications.

- Speaking with public and making presentations
- Writing progress reports, technical reports or scientific publications
