Reporting to the Senior Director for Research, the Deputy Director provides broad managerial and scientific support for the development, implementation, monitoring and dissemination of the ICAP portfolio of research studies and evaluations. S/he will also independently lead studies and evaluations as the study director and/or principal investigator and support the overall management and implementation of a defined set of country specific implementation studies and randomized clinical trials. S/he will ensure the timely and effective implementation of research activities across all ICAP units and country programs and that all research at ICAP research complies with current ethical, data use and data security standards according to local, national and international guidelines and regulations. S/he will assist in the development and influential communication of the Research Unit’s strategic vision.

Major Accountabilities
- Research Unit Activities:
• Assists with independent review and provides input into the development of ICAP portfolio of research studies and evaluations
• Ensures timely and effective implementation of research activities across all ICAP units and country programs
• Cultivates a strong working relationship with the CUMC IRB to support ICAP investigators to prepare, submit and receive approval for high quality research studies
• Reviews all protocols and studies and work with ICAP investigators to ensure proper use of service and program data for research purposes
• Supports select ICAP country teams to develop relevant, scientifically sound research portfolios
• Collaborates extensively with ICAP investigators to prepare analyses, abstracts, papers and reports from research projects
• Prepares reports, presentations, communications, and materials describing and documenting ICAP research
• Oversees abstract submissions and presentations at major international meetings
• Supports strategic planning for research proposals, prepare and participate in the development of new research proposals and relevant new business
• Supervises staff as required and coach and mentor staff in research skills
• Develops a body of work as an independent investigator including leading the submission of new studies as principal and co-investigator, prepares and submits analyses for presentation and publication,
• Participates in appropriate departmental activities such as teaching and committee membership Global TA and BAA (ART-DR Consortium):
• Provides direct oversight and support the portfolio of studies and evaluations within the Global Technical Assistance and BAA awards
• Manages development, review and finalization of work plans for studies and evaluations
• Oversees development of budgets, budget modifications and monitor program expenditures for the in collaboration with study leads
• Monitors implementation progress, and identify and address implementation challenges in collaboration project leads, country and headquarter and CDC and USAID staff
• Identifies and builds relationships with technical and domain leads at the Centers Disease Control, USAID and other collaborators to develop new studies and projects
• Facilitates communication, review and approval of studies and projects through the CDC, USAID and other regulatory systems
• Manages the documentation and dissemination of project results, including preparation and submission of progress reports, presentations, and other program documentation
• Participates in the design and implementation of assessments, program reviews and evaluation activities
• Leads and directs a select number of studies and evaluations
• Perform other related duties, as directed
Education
• Doctoral degree in public health, epidemiology, medicine or related discipline
Experience, Skills & Minimum Required Qualifications
• 8+ years of related work experience
• 5+ years of experience in developing and implementing research studies
• 5+years HIV/AIDS or infectious disease experience with program development, implementation, or research in developing country settings
• Demonstrated track record with publications in scientific journals and presentations at scientific conferences
• Demonstrated experience in supervisory capacity
• Ability to anticipate challenges and develop contingency plans
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Excellent writing ability, strong interpersonal, group facilitation and oral presentation skills
• Demonstrated experience working with implementing partners, international donors and other counterparts
• Demonstrated experience working in teams, as well as, working independently with minimum supervision Travel RequirementsRequires international travel of 3-4 trips per year
