IRC reaches over a million children annually with education and child protection programs in 25 countries around the world. The Education technical unit defines the vision and strategic priorities for all of IRC’s education a programs. The team provides evidence-based and contextually-relevant technical support to programs, with the goal of ensuring they are technically sound and achieving the outcomes we seek.
The Research, Evaluation and Learning Unit spearheads IRC’s work to conduct and use research, cost analysis, and monitoring data to inform decision making and improve effectiveness throughout the organization and in the broader humanitarian field.
Job Overview/Summary:
This position will be a member of the Research, Evaluation and Learning Unit and work closely with the Education Unit to advance the research on education, including working with the Education Technical Unit to set a research agenda, identifying research projects that have potential for high impact, mapping out and engaging with relevant partners, and implementing and publishing high-quality research.
The role reports to the Senior Director of the Research Evaluation and Learning unit and work closely with the Education Technical Unit.
Major Responsibilities:
1 Create and lead a research agenda for IRC’s education programs 2 Lead an internal team focused on education research 3 Publish research findings in academic journals and practitioner-focused outlets; 4 Represent research across the organization, serving as a key resource to IRC staff seeking information, including external relations and advocacy departments. Respond to field queries regarding research and evaluation and present findings in actionable terms. 5 Represent research and IRC in outside meetings and academic forums with donors, other non-governmental organizations, inter-agency working groups, foundations and other practitioners in the field. 6 Share the latest research with technical units and field programs to support evidence-based programming 7 Lead the business development process for research, including identifying opportunities, gathering information ahead of proposals, and gathering the technical and financial resources needed for quality proposal development 8 Collaborate with colleagues within the education team, research team and R&D team, and within other IRC departments, in pursuit of the tasks above 9 Develop and maintain relationships with outside partners, particularly academic institutions, in pursuit of the tasks above 10 Other tasks as negotiated
Job Requirements:
- PhD in education, economics or related field
- Demonstrated publication record
- Strong quantitative skills. Experience or expertise in qualitative research a plus.
- Minimum five years progressive experience in education research and/or relevant practice
- Demonstrated experience with business development
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in a multi-cultural environment
- Solid organizational skills: the ability to be flexible and work well under pressure, dealing with competing priorities, in a fast-paced team environment;
- Interest in and ability to think and plan at the ‘big picture’ level;
- Fluent in English; French or Arabic language a plus
Working Environment:
- Standard office work environment
- Travel required 25%
- Preference for NY or DC, but negotiable
